The leather on my steering wheel has started to wear off a bit in various places, and short of buying an entirely new one from Porsche ( with a core exchange ) which will still cost close to $ 2,000 <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> or replacing it with something else that's used, does anyone know of any shops which will refurbish the wheel in the factory leather and do a job almost indistinguishable from the factory in the final fit and finish ?



I realize there are numerous places which claim to refurbish steering wheels "to perfection" but even the best shops by their own admission will not even come close to the finish of the factory wheel, as tight and as seamless as such are.. skived, glued, stitched/sewn and then heat shrunk to a point where even an expert could not tell it's not the original..



Or has anyone here had one actually done by a shop where the finish was indeed as the original ?



If so, please let me know what shop/where...

I have a Porsche wheel that I had "enhanced" by AGLA. The wheel was new, but I had it thickened and covered with a delightfully soft leather. I have a "before" photo - when I dig the car out of the ice, I'll take an "after" photo. The work is nothing short of excellent, and I consider it indistinguishable from factory work.

WOW ! I can't believe my eyes - looks better than factory ( not sure if it feels as shrunk-fit as the factory, but probably damn near it.. )

I saw the posts with DIY on switching to a CS wheel, but if you simply replace an identical wheel, should I presume this is involves no more than a 15 min. plug-n-play process, as in...the removal of only a couple of screws and a few wiring harness plugs , disconnect, connect, you're good to go ?!



Disconnecting negtive battery terminal cable , noted of course..

Yeah it's pretty simple, you just need to wait a while between disconnecting the battery and removing the airbag harness to avoid any chance of the airbag going off. I could help you out if you want.

Real nice site. I Would consider a wheel recover since they can do the air bag , too. 928leathershop did not want to do the steering wheel because of the airbag.

There are a couple nice steering wheels with air bag for sale on rennlist.

I just saw one in the members classified in very nice condition for $100 plus shipping.

Something like this is going to be your cheapest and best bet.

thanks, but as it happens I just got a slightly used one in classic grey, and you're absolutely right.. best bet and cheaper than having to refurbish and also do withiout a wheel for a while..



at some point when and if I redo the seats, etc.. I may go for the three spoke air bag one - pricey, but they're beautiful and second generation air bags so the "punch" will be a bit more forgiving when it deplys <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Lots of nice used ones out there.

I sold my wheel in perfect condition (no signs of wear at all), 2 years ago for $250.

i sold mine too for somewhere around that much



i just hate that wheel - too large- too skinny - too hard - ugly - dated



lots of nicer looking, more comfortable, smaller airbag wheels out there, and can be done in any color you want

That was my thought.

The first thing I did was swap the wheel for a MOMO. Which is now in the 951 and CS wheel in the 968.
