My starter is starting to show signs of age so I'm thinking of either replacing it or having it rebuilt before it quits on me and leaves me standing there wishing I had done something about it sooner. I remember having read something about a smaller, lighter and yet stronger starter available for our cars - is that true or was it just a dream?

A clean-up and re-lube can do wonders. It worked on mine. Do a search on gummy started syndrome.

Yeah, I read about the gss problem. But I remember when I swapped the old Bendix in my long gone Plymouth in favour of a much smaller and 50% stronger aftermarket unit - amazing difference! So I'm hoping to find something similar for the 968.

I'm not aware of any. I remember Flash mentioning that he is considering making an adapter to he could switch to a different brand, so I assume there's nothing available off-the-shelf. Seems the chances of custom stuff like this being available on a car with such limited production numbers are slim-to-none, and without Flash, they'd be none [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif[/img]

My starter is making some "chirping" noises when I first start up the car. It starts fine and it has been making these noises for a while but I'm wondering if they also mean that the starter is on the way out. What is the best source for replacement/rebuild? It looks like the replacement is pretty straight forward.

be VERY sure to carefully check out the INSIDE of the harness containing the wires at the starter - they are very well known for hardening and cracking and shorting out and resulting in very bad things happening

I haven't been able to locate an alternative starter so I'll be replacing my old unit with a new stock piece come spring. I'm guessing that it is a fairly easy task to adapt any smallish and geared Nippondenso or whatever to do the job both better and quieter than the big lump that's sitting there now. I know I have the drawing of the Mopar Performance mini starter somewhere (very small and IIRC it's 2,2 hp) and maybe all that's required is an adapter plate. How powerful is our starter?

I'm in the same boat. The car has been on jack stands for 2 months now because I'm too busy/lazy to drop the starter off to get it either reconn-ed or replaced.. I think the solenoid is shot as when I try to start, it either does not make contact with the flywheel and just spins, or it does make contact, and then jams and won't turn. Then I need to R&R the starter . Luckily it only got stuck twice, both times in my driveway. Now it it jams every time. I meant to get it fixed today, but, everybody is back at work and the mails won't stop... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

My starter in my '94 6-speed was not disengaging properly, making that "whirring" sound when releasing. I pulled it and noticed that the bushing on the end of the starter shaft was completely missing from its bore in the engine. Not sure if it wore out and disintegrated or was missed when the starter was replaced the last time. Something to check; not sure how significant it is to the proper operation of the starter, but I replaced it and the starter works fine now. I envisioned the starter shaft deflecting slightly without the bushing in place...maybe Flash or someone else has some insight into this.

that one sounds like "gummy starter syndrome" - there is a fix - do a search for that term
