Squeaking clutch noise

This is more annoying than troublesome but may be a potential problem in the future.

When engaging the clutch, especially when the car has been sitting for a while, there is a squeaking sound, kinda like a door hinge that hasn't been lubed in centuries. It is not the throw out bearing as it has nothing to do about wether the car is running or not, my guess the noise has its origin somewhere between the hydraulic actuator and bearing. It sounds like metal-to-metal and since clutch is otherwise perfect I'm also assuming that all parts are still in there and that it simply needs lubrication. But where to lube and what is the best grease to use? I hope this can be don with everything in car and I plan to do it as soon as I get my brake and shifter lines from Pete.

This sounds like the needle bearing on the shaft of the clutch fork. I don't know if adding lube will fix it, but they are quite cheap to replace IIRC it was about €10 for the pair.

It could also be the cup of the fork where the slave cylinder shaft comes in. That should be much easier to lube. You should use heavy duty grease, you can buy it especially for clutches mine is made by LUK.

I looked through PET and the workshop manual but couldn't find any pictures of the setup. Do you have any?

Here's a screen shot of the assembly and part numbers in PET.

When a replaced my clutch I ended up having to replace both the bearings and the shaft, but some people are lucky and only need to replace the bearings. I don't want to scare you, but come to think of it you cannot get the fork out of the bell housing unless you have the pressure plate removed. Getting to a point where the pressure plate is removed is quite a task. Anyway, I'm about to replace the clutch line as soon as it gets here from RS Barn. When under there I might as well fiddle with the squeak too. It is not a crunching shot-bearing sound, rather a dry metal-to-metal squeak. I you ever had a boat with one of those spring type absorbers for the moorings you know what sound I'm talking about. Hopefully, and likely as from your picture and the type of noise, it is the cup that needs greasing. I'd rahter not mess with the clutch itself as I know I'll end up buying a new all-inclusive flywheel setup from RS Barn and my wife will surely kill me if I even hint something in that direction. And since clutch work includes removing parts of the exhaust it would be a shame not to replace header too...... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]
