Spring Maintenance - Gear Box and Transaxle
#1

With spring approaching, I am collecting all the things I should be done when I take the car to the shop the first time after winter. So:

- Should I change the oil in the Gear box? Not sure it has ever been changed ... is there a schedule for that?

- If so which oil should I use? I only drive the car in >32F conditions, and I track the car occasionally.

- Does the Transaxle have oil too (don't beat me - I'm clueless)? Should that be changed? Is so, what oil to use?

I changed mine awhile ago. It had never been changed. Does you car have a limited slip unit? Redline or Amsoil should be fine. I am sure others have differenet opinions of the fluid to use.

I changed mine once about 5 years ago with Motul. Transaxle/gearbox all the same unit. I assume the Trans part is transmission (gearbox) and axle.

Did mine a couple of months ago. A couple of tips on here saved my butt. First, DON"T drain the fluid until the filler plug is removed. The fill plug is probably crazy tight, so plan on heating up the gearbox around the plug to get it to move. If you drain it first, there is no way to get the fresh fluid in and you are dead in the water (learned that one the hard way). The drain plug was a lot easier to get out, so save that one for last.

I used Amsoil because it was the only one I could find locally that had the right specs. Some were close, but not exactly what Porsche called for.

Last, don't overfill it, overfilling makes the shifting sluggish and is hard on the shifting mechanism. Fill it while the car is level and you should be fine.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I make sure to open the filler plug first ...

Where do I find those specs? Are they in the manual (car is under a cover in the garage)? Is there any differnce for track use vs. regular use?

Thanks!

75-90 GL5, about 3 qts. Lots of GL4 out there, not sturdy enough for the Porsche engineers, go with the GL5. Also, Mobile 1 has a GL5 that is close to 75-90, but not exactly the right specs, so I went with the Amsoil because that's who had the proper weight and duty specs.

Remember, take off the left rear wheel to get to the filler plug with a long extension, much easier to fill too. Just make sure the car is level when you fill it.
