Yesterday and the day before I was in Weissach and Stuttgart (Germany)

We visited Porsche Weissach , The Porsche Museum , the Stuttgart Dealer and around the Stuttgart Factory .

There we spotted the new Porsche 911 (Type 991)

Looks great I think. Huge wheel wells make those 19's look smallish.



I read that the engine in the 991 has been moved forward a few inches as compared with the 997, to aid vehicle dynamics. Maybe in a few decades the engine in the 911 will migrate forward of the rear axle, where it should have been all along.



BTW, why isn't this car called a 998?

I can't say I see a huge difference between the 991 and the 997, either. I remember when the 911 was around a $10,000 car. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> The new one just looks expensive, especially in that color.

Yes, now that you mention it, I think I do too. Words I'd use to describe it include "purposeful," "aggressive," and "serious." If you like the 911, I'd say it's a nicely done evolution.

Motor Trend just covered this car. It's bigger and the engine went inboard. The rear wheels came back at the same time and the car got lighter. The car lost 80 lbs through a lot of very expensive metalurgy. No doubt it will be a better car than it replaces, though I'm drawn more to the Cayman design myself.



On another note, I read of rumors that the 928 coming back in the form of the 929. Speculators claim that it will be built from the Panamera chassis.

I searched for other images to see it from various angles, rear, etc.. Not my cup of tea, but then again I really do not like 911 body styles , so the update / change of a new model would have to be radical to peak my interest..and this one does nothing for me. If I were to pick a 911 platform, an old 993 or a GT3 / GT2 body line would be probably the only ones..

i have spoken to porsche about this - there is a plan to have a 2 door panamera, which would be the successor to the 928 - not sure what they will call it though

The wheelbase stretch is said to allow a future hybrid drive system. The early videos from Porsche look nice, and the engine note sounds fantastic!

Headlights are slightly more "bulbous" than the 997 and the rear lights are more blade like. If you likr the 911 generic shape I think this one is a reasonable development of the type.

that's funny - of all the 911s, i hate the 996 the least - the fact that it is somewhat of a departure from the 911 is what i found most attractive about it - the headlights are a big one for me, and i wish i could incorporate those into the 968, as well as the more aggressive looking front end

lol - That actually makes sense. Among 911 fanatics, the 996 is for some reason treated like the red-headed stepchild, so it seems logical that someone who doesn't like the looks of the 911 would dislike the 996 least. Personally, I have to really squint to see a lot of difference among the last three generations or so.



I like, but don't love, the looks of the 911, so I'm kind of on the fence. There are definitely much prettier cars, but I guess something about the car's iconic-ness and enduring nature elevates it a bit somehow. I prefer the Cayman, though.



But take a look at this: What looks like a garden-variety 1970 911S selling for over $1.2 million, just because it was owned by Steve McQueen!

Incredible. What's even more amazing to me is that I read in another article that this model, without the benefit of celebrity ownership, can fetch up to $50K. Wha??!! I would have guessed more like $20K, in pristine condition.

I like Steve McQueen, but still would not pay more than $ 3 k for that old piece of crap 911.. If you,re into celebrity stuff, buy one of James Coburn,s Jags .. As for the 996, while it still looks more or less like all the other 911s to me, the turbo version of it is not that bad.

I test drove a 1970 911S when I was in college. I actually liked the way it drove - it had the most communicative steering of any car I've ever driven. But I can't imagine anyone paying $50K for one.

Hi all,

I do like the 911. My understanding is that the 996 has engine issues (boxster also). So prices is junk...

SO the choices are either the 993 or the 997. Almost bought the 964 back in the day but when the 993 came out,

there was no comparison.

IMHO, the 991 is evolutionary in shape and will be a great GT car.

My beef with the front end of the 996 was the ill considered parts bin el cheapo decision to use the jewellry off the boxter.  If that front end had appeared that way without the obvious cost cutting manouevre I might think better of it.



As to Steve McQueen's 911, it's all about the provenance, as they say in the art world.  A Picasso is a Picasso, but if it was once owned by Sopia Loren it's A PICASSO!!!



I always remember a Road & Track test of the 911S when it first came out in the US; the headline was - "Performance of the order of an Americam Muscle car without the stigma of low cost."  LOL
