That guy had to be thinking "F#&^, what do I tell my insu agent and wife?"

He may have been thinking those things - but how is it that he didn't say anything? The audio was running continuously, but the driver isn't heard to utter a word. Amazing. I also can't quite figure out how this accident happened. It doesn't look like the rear starting coming around until after the car went left at which point it started to spin. Did the front get light, pushing the car outside? Is this a 911-thing? Thoughts? Lessons? Kudos to the driver for being willing to post the video.

i'm with you jim - i'm guessing he had a tire failure or something - there seems to be no reason for that loss of control unless something went wonky

It's also worth noting that he simply got out of the car, completely unscathed. The car certainly protected the driver (at least in terms of personal injury)! I wonder if all of the stability management electronics were active?

As stated by a 993 driver "You simply have to keep that throttle down to regain control".

Looks to me as if he clipped the apex while lifting off the throttle. The front of the GT3 is very light and at that speed while the front end is lifted the back will step out. Counter steer and apply gas with the RR's and you stand a better chance of regaining control. Counter w/o gas and it will snap.

Not as much my words as they are friends of mine w/ RR cars.

PS. If you do a search on that track you will find that that section of track is prone to accidents, even by the pros. So perhaps he had no biz approaching that climb near the top of 4th.

ok - i'll bite - what the heck is an RR car?

as for the rest, i certainly agree with what you are saying about staying on it, but it just didn't look like he was going all that fast that he should lose it like that - it's not like he looked like he was drifting through or anything and overcorrected - who knows?

RR = Rear engine, rear wheel drive?

Don't the GT3s have both AWD as well as Traction Control. With such cars, the manuals usually say to let the car do the correction (cut fuel and apply individual braking) rather than the driver getting off the gas.

If it was my car, I would have been cussing so loud, they would have heard it in several zip codes. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> He must have a few more in his garage.

in looking at it, i can't think of a much more well staged finale than the camera on the door and holding the shot - he moved the camera all around as he was getting out, and then left it on the seat framed just right to catch the door, complete with the airbag dust wisping around

either he had incredible presensce of mind through all this, kept his composure, didn't utter a word, and then thought to get the camera in place for the closing shot, or........

i'm thinking this came from the same source as the car whose wheels fell off

But as mentioned RR is rear engine rear wheel drive. That being said I'm sure all the others will make sense.

There was the comment that it didn't look that fast. The top of 3rd in our cars is 87mph (Well, I'm not chipped yet) this guy was in 4th! I'm betting he was in the triple digits when the slide commenced.

thanks

not nitpicking here, but it sounded like he was lugging the engine before he lifted off, and it looked like he was going about 60 based on the objects passing by - hard to tell in camera shots like that - still fast enough to make a mess of the car though

but, i still can't help but wonder about the film

Have to disagree with you there Flash. He was doing much more than 60mph. I'd say more like 85+ but I'm just as dumbfounded as to why it happened. He just kisses the right curb and then the wheel goes loose in his hands. Almost looks like oil on track, but probably just lift off as stated.

I'm hoping that some of our experienced racers will look at this and offer their views. Watching the video several more times reinforces my early impression that the front got light (uphill being a contributing factor) and the car went into a major understeering situation that ended in the spin. If that's correct, could this have been saved? I still don't understand how the driver didn't utter an "Oh, s--t". From studies done of airplane crashes, that's the most common phrase ground controllers hear just before a SERIOUS (usually fatal) incident happens. How this guy could stay silent...

that's ok - i'm just counting the red/white bars and looking at the clock - how are you figuring his speed?

Gearing.

He exits the tight corner in 2nd revs up, pushes 3rd, revs up pulls 4th mid rev and eases off on the climb. No way mid 4th in a GT3 is 60mph

yeah, but it doesn't sound like he's doing much in revs, and really lugging the engine - he was off throttle for a long time - tough to figure without a tach though - he could be going much faster than i think, and as i said, it is very hard to tell in the film - i was just counting the red and white bars on the left and timing them, then converting ft/sec to mph - i got about 60 at the time he spun - while i hate to admit it, having spun at that speed more than once, it looked about right too

I looks to me that he lifted or got caught out by cold tires or something on the track. His initial input is to the left, telling me the rear end was stepping out that way. He went to far with the correction and the car hooked up and went left. He tried to bring it back but by then he was way behind the car. It would have been a giant tank slapper if the wall didn't catch him. I'm not surprised he didn't say anything. I doubt I would have either. Did anybody notice the yellow 968 roll by at about the 1:10 mark?
