A lot of life can be brought back to old paint with a bit of care. I was in the same boat, but after seeing how much this brightened up the car, it isn't really needed.

Walk us thru your process, please!

I may have one to do before too long, and would like to know the "secrets" of your success!

BTW, love the '68...

PS: The little Black ID Badge that fits on the two screws on the aluminum cover plate that says "PORSCHE" on your engine, is still available from Porsche at any dealer... I think I had to give them $12.00 for it, but it's nice to have all of the detail stuff on the car!

not sure I know which black ID badge you're referring to... I'll have to glance at the motor and see if it makes more sense...

I really didn't do that complicated of a detailing job, and could have taken it much further(I'd love to, just don't know how to use a rotary buffer, and didn't have the time to order any fancy detailing products... just used off the shelf kragen stuff).

I washed the car with some car wash soap... didn't use dawn as there wasn't any wax to remove... the paint was bare.

Dried it off using a nice microfiber drying cloth.

Used the meguiar's clay bar from kragen.

Washed again with the same soap.

Dried again.

The clay bar kit I bought came with a little bottle of cleaner wax. I applied this, and really tried to work it in. Buffed it out with a microfiber polishing cloth.

I then went over the whole car with the detailing shine that came with the clay bar to be used as a lubricant.

Nothing too fancy, and much better results could be achieved, but for the $50 or so I spent on everything(from soap to the clay bar to the wax applicators, wash mits, and drying cloth), I'm very pleased.

For under the hood, I wrapped up the sensitive stuff(fuse box, dizzy, battery), then used a foaming engine cleaner I found at kragen. Did this with the engine warm, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrubbed a bit where there was some caked on stuff. Hosed it off, tried to dry any obvious puddles with a towel, then turned the engine on and let it dry.

Again, I could go much further with it... just was trying to make some improvements to the overall condition in the time I had.

I haven't touched the interior yet, but it's pretty clean from the previous owner

The piece that DV is talking about says "VARICAM" and it attaches to the "PORSCHE" engine cover on the passenger side.

Yep, that is the piece! I think it gets removed the first time a timing belt is changed, and never seems to find its way back home again!

BTW, fantastic results for $50 and labor! I guess that Clay Bar is really all that is is said to be! Do you have to use a lot of the lubricant with the Bar, or just a light mist to keep it moving???

Very interesting stuff!

Clay bars work wonders... I've used them on many vehicles and they always leave great results.

You want a light mist to keep it moving, but certainly don't want it soaking wet. It's pretty easy to feel when it's about right. Not enough and the bar really drags, too much and it jumps all over the place.

Smokey, that bright work looks great. Are those aftermarket covers or polished/chromed OEM parts? (I'm guessing aftermarket considering the rough finish if the OEM stuff.)
