Speedometer
#1

Greetings! I have a 1992 968 Cabrio with an inoperative speedometer. In addition to that, the odometer, trip meter, and cruise control also do not work. I am guessing that it has something to do with a sender. However, I cannot tell from the shop manual where the sender is. Porsche told me that it is on the side of the transmission, but I think that's correct only for automatics. The only electrical connection that I can find on the transmission is the back up light switch. Not sure if this is related, but there is a fuse for the ABS that keeps blowing. This is my first Porsche. I have higher than average mechanical abilities (though I am by no means a professional) but the wiring diagrams are leaving me quite confused. This is also my first posting, so be gentle with me.

Okay folks, I'm making progress (albeit entirely not enough progress) in figuring this ABS/Speedo thing out. I've come to the conclusion that there are no shorts in the sensor circuit at the wheels because I've disconnected them all and there's still a closed circuit somewhere in the ABS. However, I still have no idea where it might be or how to locate it. Guys, I know I'm not the only one who has encountered this problem before so if anybody can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it.

The diagrams stink, it appears there is a red wire running off the battery on left hand drive cars to your ABS mod., check that out. if your blowing fuses you have a wire being grounded or drawing too much current thru a relay ??, On the RHD cars check the wiring near the starter, not sure if it is red or black. You could take them off and check for continuity to ground.

Mr. Moran: Thanks for your response. I have ordered a new relay for the circuit box. It is clearly closed between terminals 30 and 31 all of the time. Judging from the diagram on the cover of the relay, it does not appear that it should be closed all of the time between those two terminals. I hope that's all the problem is. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your insights. Jim in Atlanta
