speeding ticket
#21

Bailif (sp?) offered the "deal" on behalf of the Judge, who took such a long lunch that he

could have been to Atlantic City and back. In this situation, you take the "deal", because at least in my

case ( and probably everyone else), I was guilty as the day is long. And Philly might be the "City the loves you back", but it not going to give you your money back!

I saw an article yesterday re traffic citations in Finland ; the reason that ostensibly boring subject even made the news is because of a ( us$ equivalent ) $ 50,000 ticket given to a man for going about 10 mph over the posted speed limit. The article indicated the judges in Finland can, and most often do factor in tne person's salary and/or net worth in determining the fine. This guy happened to be a multi-millionaire so he got soaked with a hell of a penalty ... So I googled this and discovered that $ 50 k does not even come close to the record - there have quite a few been fines in recent years exceeding $ 100 K , and one listed at almost $ 150 k . " Progressive penalties " Interesting concept ; they think it's a fair system others think it's draconian . If you're wealthy ( and value your money ) don't break the rules !

My best in getting out of a speeding ticket occurred about 30 years ago. I was sitting at work and my phone rang. My sister told me that my Dad had a heart attack and to get to the hospital quick. (turns out he did not have the attack but I did not know this until I got to the hospital) So there I  was sitting at a traffic light waiting to get onto the highway by going down a ramp and the speed limit on the highway was 55. The light turned green and a cop who was directly behind me pulled me over at the bottom of the ramp. I jumped out ran to his car with my license registration insurance card and told him just to give me the ticket as fast as possible as I was on the way to the hospital. He told me to slow down as he clocked me doing 95 at the bottom of the ramp, and it would not do my Dad any good if I was in an accident. He let me go no ticket.

They are called Day Fines, and the fine is calculated on a percentage of a working day. They level the playing field, and they seem to work for those countries that utilize the idea.

Quote:I think it depends on what state you live in. Some states communicate with each other and some do not. I think NY and NJ share info because so many people travel bteween the 2.

My GF got a ticket in MD a couple months back (she has a NY DL) and no points were assesed on her DL or with Geico.

I got a ticket in Indiana while I was, oddly enough, driving my 968 from Las Vegas to New York when I brought it out two years ago.  Never any points on NY license or either of my insurance policies.  (Grundy for the 968/Progressive for my DD/MCs)

I have been clean for almost 20 years. I moved to Florida 9 years ago.

I got stopped on I95 for 83mph in a 70mph zone in my truck. State trooper.

I got grilled -

"Do you know how fast you were going?"

"Do you have a logical reason for driving so fast?"

"Where are you going?" (this one irritated me very much.)

"License and registration please."

"Ok stay here."

I am very much a yes sir, no sir person with law enforcement. I am polite, and answer honestly. I don't move my hands off the steering wheel until they tell me as I don't want to get shot...they get pretty nervous down here...I usually ask for some consideration and they can see my record at least in Florida is spotless...

He comes back, tickets printed and all set. No need to sign anything in Florida. Lets me go. Total speed trap.

I don't mind enforcement as a safety issue, but when it is a pure cash grab, it irks me.

I left got passed by more than 75 vehicles as I was doing the allotted speed limit of 70mph down and back.

On the way back, a county motorcycle cop gives me the stink eye as he pulls off the ramp and another car passes me like I am standing still and he ignores it.

If I was in the Porsche doing 120mph, sure I will take my lumps. No problem...but not in a gaggle of cars all doing over 80. Not fair. (Down here on I95, if you are going 80, you still get passed like you are doing 70)

In Florida, as soon as you get a ticket, you start getting the mailings ( I must have gotten at least 6 or 7)  from lawyers to take your tickets to court. As long as it is just a speeding ticket, they will take it to court and get the fine and points removed.

I think the fine was $130 and 3 points...It cost me the $130 to the court, and about $130 ish (don't remember the exact amount) to the lawyer. I didn't have to go to court, I got the fine and the points dismissed. No rise in insurance rates.

I don't know how many times you can do this, I don't think a lot. They have to be spread out quite a bit and no DUI's or anything serious.

So that is Florida.

As an aside, if you are traveling here, and take a prescription pain killer, it better be in the pharmacy bottle and have your name on the prescription. If they find one pill, like an Oxycontin or other narcotic, that is not in the original bottle, you go directly to jail and they keep your car and any cash on you. Enjoy your travels.

I got pulled over in the 968 a few weeks ago for 36 in a 25 zone. Forgot there's a section where the road curves and the speed limit drops and then resunes, more fun in the 968 than the Tacoma btw. Thought for sure it was ticket time. I also do the yes sir, sorry sir, hands on the steering wheel drill as they also shoot in AZ, even us non-hispanics. He wrote it up as 34 so he could give me a warning instead of a ticket. I have a contribution decal for the AZ Highway Officers Association in my back window. I think that has saved me money over the years, cheaper than a lawyer.

my record : 704 $ , speeding 186kph on freeway

average salary here , 920 $/month

we have a system, in which if you do  3 serious rule violations (speeding above some speed, not stopping on STOP) in 12 months , you go to the tests to the police, and when you fail them  , you will lose your license

There have been a couple of incidents in the Bay Area where cars with   " 9-11 foundation "  license plate frames  and " FOP "  ( fraternal order of police )  stickers on their cars' windows have been vandalized, and one actually ended up with a few bullet holes in it - the media believes there are a few local groups ( I'll call them gangs..since they're nothing but punks ..) generally resentful of anything that honors the police and take their frustration out on cars which display anything of the sort.  So it can be a bit of a dilemma ; do you hope to get out of a ticket by having one of those things on the car but risk the possibility of your irreplaceable hatchback window being blown out by a bb gun..or a hammer ?

Heck, if I acted on my sentiments about all the annoying bumper stickers I see on cars, the bay area ( just in Berkeley alone, LOL..) is such a rich target,  I'd be spending countless hours driving around with a paint gun , LOL..

I had one on my plate for a while, as my truck plate is asymmetrical - so it didn't cover any numbers - never had an issue but it was plastic and just disintegrated.

Both are under a clear plastic plate cover - which for some reason are illegal in Florida. When I got my ticket in my truck, the trooper wrote me a warning for having my plate under a cover. Actually, in my opinion, unless it's tinted dark, it actually helps law enforcement as it keeps the plate clean and legible...

A bigger problem in Florida, is there are many so called - police agencies that are soliciting donations via the phone, that you can't tell which is the real sheriff or which is the actual non-profit.

I'm guessing my "Nuke the Gay Whales" bumper sticker would not be popular???

Jay, where do you get those stickers?  They'd do well here in AZ.

I guess I need to remove my police support sticker before driving west..... Can't afford a new rear window.

The  " nuke the gay whales "  sticker probably sells pretty well in Indiana now..and in Arkansas  ( btw, why are y'all pronouncing that state Arkansaw ?! )   Hey, if I had a dime for every crazy ultra tree-hugging liberal bumper sticker I see around these parts, I could buy another 968 :glare:   Not saying that I don't hold some ( a very few ) of those views, but message bumper stickers on cars drive me nuts.  The police should stop those folks and hand out tickets just for polluting the world with their views - keep your opinions to yourself, or,  on the forums ...where they belong

Vegan stickers seem to be popular now in Silicon Valley.     WTF,  I define vegans as : individuals who have a moral objection to eating anything that has any taste / flavor to it.

So DS, please enlighten your fellow forum members on the liberal views you have.

What would be the point to that ? Besides, I hold such conflicting views at the ends of both the liberal and conservative spectrums that simply do not reconcile, so you guys would think I was schizophrenic. And so would I ...not to mention what Dan might have to say on the subject .. :-) :-)

I can't remember who, but I do recall reading about people that are wealthy and ash holy enough to park wherever they feel in the city, attitude is I am a busy person and my time is worth more to me than a fine, so I will park where is says no parking, park in handicap spots, etc.  Because a $50 fine is nothing to me and it is cheaper usually in the long run, as garage fees are high and I will most likely not get a ticket.

Not sure about other cities, but even an expired meter in San Francisco will cost $ 50. Everything else carries a significantly higher fee, AND in about 90% of parking violations scenarios this city WILL tow your car, adding another $ 300 + to whatever fine you incur. Chances you might be able to park somewhere where you're not supposed to and get away without a ticket and/or a tow ? I'd sayit's pretty close to zero in this city ..after about 3-5 minutes during which you might just have a window . I swear, the parking enforcement officers to residents ratio there must be 1:1, LOL. So even the wealthy indignant folks are unlikely to want to deal with the time and hassle of getting their car out of the tow yard, even if they easily can afford the cost ..
