speed sign

I always like to have a front door and if I don't it's nice to create one!

Often people know the road their traveling and slow down because they know where the speed traps are. Had I gone blazing around them I would've been cooked.

[/quote]

How true this quote is

This past Friday I was driving for an hour or so, driving about 10 -15 KM over the posted max speed limit of 90 KM/H. As I was approaching a curve in the road, there was a Camry going slow so I blazed around it and as soon as I came around the curve I was cooked!

The radar detector went off but I was already clocked at 114 KM/H in what the police officer called a 60 KM/H zone. He must have based that on the yellow Advisory Speed sign that I happened to miss as I was passing the slow poke.

In BC anything 40 KM over the posted speed zone is called Excessive Speed and not only comes with a hefty fine, BUT... they also impound your vehicle for a week! Tow truck gets called out, car gets hauled away to the local assigned impound lot and you can come and collect your vehicle after seven days. The Camry driver probably was a local and knew that the police sit at the bottom of the hill with their radar focused on that curve. It was a very strange feeling seeing your baby hauled away on a flat bed tow truck (at least it was a flat bed!) and then having to wait around for the taxi to show up and take you to the bus depot! It was an even stranger feeling trying to explain to my daughter why she had to come to pick her parents up from the bus depot!!!

I have done some investigation into the meaning of the BC Traffic Signs, and it seems that the yellow signs are Advisory speed limits, not Maximum speed limits. I also asked a cop friend about this matter yesterday. Once I go and pick up the 968 on Saturday I will drive by the area and check to see if the sign is indeed a yellow Advisiory sign and then I will decide if I want to contest the ticket in court... Probably not worth my time, because even if I manage to have the ticket annulled, it will be next to impossible to be re-imbursed for the towing and impound fees.

Check the picture out. The police cruiser is ahead of the tow truck with the hood up. As the tow truck showed up, the cruiser overheated and the cop also had to wait for a tow and a ride back into town. Would that be karma? There was a small amount of satisfaction when riding away in the taxi, to see the cruiser with the hood up and the officer waiting to be rescued...

Sounds like the Canadian Highway Patrol are zealots like their Australian relations. No common sense at all. Traffic infringements are seen as a source of revenue by the Government. Stupidly slow speed limits are put in place, particularly roadworks, where nothin is being done, simply to trap motorists.

The damage that this behavior does to the "Police" brand and community perception is huge, yet they don't seem to care. Previously, the Police would push back on stupid policies or directives, now they say - "we just enforce the law". This is like trying to say - "I was just following orders" at a war crimes court.

Interesting that over here, when the Police are pushing for a pay rise, the first thing they do, is refuse to issue traffic fines to push the Government to cave into their demands. If that doesn't tell you what is going on, nothing will.

We have "anti hoon" laws, where your car can be impounded and if you offend enough, the car can be confiscated and crushed. What gets you onto this list, simply spinning your wheels is enough - it does not have to be a burn out, just spinning your wheels makes you a hoon.

Way too many stupid laws, why not simply book people for dangerous driving?

Sorry, should have also added, get caught doing 40/h over the speed limit (not the advisory sign, the speed limit) and you will lose your license for 6 months and get 6 demerit points. Lose 12 or more demerit points within 3 years and you lose you license for another period on top of this.

We also have "double demerit" periods around public holidays and long weekends. We also have Red light cameras, speed cameras, point to point average speed monitoring, combination red light and speed cameras, numberplate scanning by Police vehicles on the side of the road, etc.

Super Police and Nanny state with limited personal freedoms - you bet.

Sounds like you need a cloaking device! Although you have mentioned yours have great distances involved, that's what's great about participating in DE events. No worries about speed and the pooleece.

Not to mention the factor of traffic. I read the other day that the traffic here in Austin is now the 4th most congested in the country. The city has simply grown too fast, and this has overwhelmed our road system, and there's virtually no public transportation here. Even the weekends are often very congested. Makes having a nice car seem like a waste, unfortunately, which is partly why, to Rap's comment, I converted my 968 to a mostly-track car (almost finished! - although I've been saying that for the past six months...) - it's the only place I can really have fun with the car.

It's regretful and outrageous that it has come to this level of nonsense and that no one ( I mean that in a collective sense , in any given city, county, state or country ) seems to be able to do anything about it . Reckless driving , excessive speed in heavy traffic, driving fast in school zones, running lights or stop signs, DUI, etc, yes, entirely reasonable to vigorously enforce but these other draconian rules some of which are applied to negligible mph over the posted speed limits, or other traffic " violations " that are for the most part inconsequential, is government sanctioned insanity ! And we just grin and bear it .

Jake, I have nothing to say, I am too sad. What a crappy end to a perfect weekend on the Island. We raised 15,000 on the weekend for charity and 720.00 of that was so that Norm, our Cops for Cancer rep, wouldn't leave the parking lot in his ghost Tahoe until we all left first! I think all cops should be able to be bought off like that

That's what's great about you Canadians. So practical. Have a cop problem? Buy them off ! So cultured. Which we did that here! lol Of course now we just underfund them and shrink their size which is what is happening in Pa. Ds, perhaps you need to move out to the country, smell the fresh air, ah the sweet smell of manure and dead animals at the side of the road and speed to your hearts content (almost). Keep your rpm's up.

Oh, puh-leaze ! How fast can you go at at DE / track before slowing down to take a turn ? 110 -120..? You call that speed ? That's why I tracked the car only once and no desire to do that again.. I need 150 mph + to make it worth my time :-). :-)

And where would that be ? Canada and Australia are certainly out, so is Germany the only sane driver's country left on this planet ?

DS I've had people go by me quite a bit faster than that. How about no cars coming from the opposite direction and no need to think about your speed and where the pooleece may be located. Surely that has some value even for a sophisticated old curmudgeon like yourself!

It does indeed have its own element of excitement, just not as much as I'd like. Maybe Nurbergring or a track with an incredibly long straight run would be best for me to get my kicks. But amen about tracks, MOST drivers there know what they're doing , no cars in the opposite direction, and NOT even ONE driver texting, eating, putting on makeup, etc.. Plus, no cops to hand you a ticket. A lot safer for sure.

i don't get the big deal about top speed. i've driven over 200 a couple of times and over 160 more times than i can count. big deal. not much to it. big open road and let 'er rip. pretty boring really. no challenge. no thrill. really only the worry about a rabbit crossing the road or a dip in it that i didn't see and getting airborne (been there done that). the fun is in the turns. i really don't care if the car only goes 120, as long as it gets there quickly, and i can control it when it does.

dan, if you like the thrill of top speed, i suggest a motorcycle. that will give you the rush you're looking for, the noise you want, and all the fear you can drum up when you hit 160, which just about every bike does nowadays.

sorry, I'm not suicidal - pretty much the same reason I don't like convertibles ( roll bar or not..) but motorcycles are simply for insane people, just begging to be killed..

Dan I agree, but I also agree with Flash. Corners and lines are pretty cool. Driving at speed in traffic has a thrill about it too.
