to speed or not to speed
#1

I'll be driving down to Los Angeles tomorrow and back on Sunday. past the dreaded spot where the timing belt snapped not too long ago ... oh great, as if I need another vivid reminder of that moment and its aftermath

Actually, I already drove by it a few weeks ago but I was in the Mercedes so even though I uttered a few choice words when passing by, driving the 968 trough there will probably feel much more reminiscent of that crappy experience..

Anyway, back to the real reason for this post : so when I had the car towed on the almost four hours haul back home, I spent a lot of time talking to the truck driver - seeing several cars stopped by the CHP within the twenty or so miles of where we started, he mentioned that he knows all of the officers that patrol that section of the highway, they spend time at picnics together and in general socializing quite a bit, in addition to their work connection..

Fast forward to the end of the trip, we drop my car off, and I hand him a $ 50 note with thanks for the long hours he wasted helping me out. The kid ( fairly young guy, maybe in his twenties..) is totally stunned, tells me that he's never received more than $ 10 from anyone he towed, asks me if I'm really sure I want to tip him this much, and furthermore stares at the $ 50 bill almost in puzzlement telling me that he's never even seen anything bigger than a $ 20 note in his life. Just as appreciative as I've seen anyone be, coat hanger in the mouth smioe on his face, so it made me feel pretty good about the whole thing also.. to me it was just $ 50 for heaven's sake, I did not hand him a jackpot lotto ticket.. but now for the KARMA: a week later I got a call from him and he says this : " when your car is fixed, and you come by here again ( I had told him I make the LA trip about three to four times a year ) , call me
a day before and let me know approximately what time you plan to be in the area, and the road will be cleared for you if you decide to do some flat-out running. Guaranteed. Just do it when and where there's very little traffic...that blue 968 will not get stopped and ticketed, no matter how fast you go "

So now I have a dilemma - I've done some max speed runs on this very highway a few times, but always with the fear in the back of my mind that by the time my radar detector beeps its too late, and I'm screwed ! Thus, I only get to the top speed very rarely, and then only sustain it for five or ten seconds. But now, here's an open door to do a few of these runs and also for a minute or two at a time, without the same concern... MAY BE

Hoenstly, I'm not sure I want to take the chance. Even if the CHP guys promise him they'll close their eyes to this, once as a courtesy, you never know if they'll really do that when it comes down to it. With my luck, the officer patroling that particular segment will have had a lousy morning and just chomping at the bit, knowing a 968 will come by and just make his promotion to sargeant ..at my expense. So as tempted as I am to take this offer up, I probably will end up driving in a very civilized manner to and back from L.A this weekend

Tempting.... I mean, on the one hand why would this guy lie to ya? You gave him a $50 tip and he seemed genuinely appreciative. Even if he was lying about knowing the cops, it seems highly unlikely that he would be malicious enough to lie a week later and trap you into a huge ticket. On the other hand, maybe the cops are playing him, hoping to bank on stopping a speeding bullet the shape of a 968. Tough call, man.

At the very least, you gotta think your normal driving pattern will be safe....

I'd probably run through where the timing belt snapped.

I'm with Ben on this one...you should drive 55 in a 65 zone cause you are certain to get a ticket in that very spot.

As much as I'd be tempted, you know what they say "when it seems to good to be true..." Sorry to rain on your parade and pile on!

I'd often contemplated asking an officer who I sorta know through a friend of a friend type deal to setup a fake radar trap and let me blow by, but just my luck, he'd get in trouble for it, so I've never asked.

Good luck however you decide to proceed.

Don't do it!!! I may have used up all your good Karma last Thursday morning. I was on my way south to a project meeting in Morro Bay. I got stopped as I was passing through that long straight 70 mph section south of King City. It was about 7:45 in the morning road completely devoid of traffic and I was cruising along at 80 mph listening to CD of the Jefferson Airplane's greatest hits and I noticed a pickup truck about a mile behind me. He was back there for about 15-20 minutes, so I didn't pay attention. Eventually he got close enough to where I could see the light bar and the big red light in the center of the grill, to late and I got pulled over.

The officer asked for my paperwork looks at it, asks me if I owned the car and where I was headed. Hands my paperwork back to me and tells me he isn't going to ticket me, just a warning. He says the younger guys that patrol the area are ticket happy. slow down and enjoy the rest of my trip.

I agree with all of you guys. As tempting as it may be, I will not be trying my luck on this trip. Not worth the risk.
It won't be easy though.. Willpower dammit, willpower !! ( talking to myself here )

I'd go for it. Just 15 minutes ago I saw the speed camera get a picture of my car two miles from my house. Luckily no points or insurance hit for those in Maryland but I would rather take my chances with a LEO, they rarely ticket me after they pull me over.

are those speed cameras only on city streets or do they actually have those damn things on highways as well ?
( exit signs and overpasses would probably be the only place to set them up )

Ummmm... and why?

A little OT, but this reminds me of the last time I was pulled over. I was on base, where the MPs are relentless. I pulled out of a parking lot with a Yield sign... and right next to the parking lot exit is a street with a stop sign. I blew through the Yield as no cars were coming, immediately an MP turned on his lights. I turned onto the street with the stop sign and pulled over. He came up to my window and he said "Uh... you just came out of the parking lot, right?" "Yes, sir..." "Yeah, I thought you ran the stop sign on this street... but I didn't realize it until you turned onto this street. So, I thought I'd just tell you, since I had you pulled over and all, that I really like your car." "Umm, thanks?! " "Sorry about pulling you over!" "Oh, it's no problem!"

About the best outcome in that situation...

When I left Germany a few years back they were beginning to install them in guardrails disguised as reflectors!! No fair!

Just on county roads here, currently in my county only. I believe Maryland passed or attempted to pass a bill allowing them on certain state highways later this year. I've known this camera was there since they put it in 6 months ago but both the truck in front of me and I blew threw it. The county cameras only get you for 10 or more MPH over and I believe part of the bill for the state said everything would go to a 12mph cushion.

Not really sure but be polite and if you can make them laugh you really have it made. At most I get the no front tag ticket instead of speeding, no points and no insurance hit once again.

That's quite a story Dan.
I want you to find a way to do it without that troubling thought of going to jail looming in the back of your head.
Perhaps you can get one of the officers to lead and you pace him as if your rushing a pregnant passenger to the emergency room. Of course at a certain point your going to have to over take him. Consider that a bonus.

Do it!

sorry but the number of forum members wearing white gowns with wings standing on my right shoulder, outnumber you standing on my left shoulder wearing that red leotard..

near end of the month quotas compounded by cash strapped municipalities tells me it would be wise to be extra careful so unless the patrol car spots me doing 65, pulls up next to me and lets me record him telling me to go as fast as I want with him clearing the road on my behalf... I'm NOT doing anything crazy

A certain synonym for 'cat' comes to mind... but then so does the response I give to that word when someone else calls me that synonym.

"You are what you eat."

I'm not the type to go running lights but I've gotten 3 redlight cam tickets and my wife has 2. Some of those lights seem to rigged with a shortened yellow light cycle.
