Solid Transmission Mount
#1

Does anyone make a solid trans mount for the 968 that does not require swapping out the 968 cross member to a 951 cross member?

Thx.

Not to my knowledge.

I know someone who had on fabricated and has a spare but i couldn't get my hands on it.

We "Shim" stock ones to reduce movement.

I'd like to make solid one and also have a torque strut for motor

Maybe one with a higher durometer rubber or even polyurethane........that should not be imposible.

I have seen one from one of the Porsche on-line shops - cannot remember which one, but when I get time I will try and track it down (Paragon parts maybe). THere are also solid transmissionmounts for the 968 listed on EBay (if you trust it), but they look similar to the ones I have previously seen (bu not annodised).

For a race application I would only be interested in a solid.

Pete, Ok time to put both the mount and strut together and bring them to market.

Cheers,

I think the ones advertized assume they fit 968. The 968 has an aluminum rear crossmember with completely different shape than 944 family.

Pete, I would agree. There is something interesting on the Paragon site called the RS transmission mount. No details or pics just a price of $300+. Did not get a chance to call Jason about this before the weekend but is sounds interesting.... other than the price.

lol - i already worked out a torque strut - i just haven't fabbed it up yet - the last time i was in there i was commenting on how much the transaxle moved around, so i worked out a design - the car will be up in the air again in the next week or so, and i'll probably get to it

a solid mount is a no brainer, but i don't think you'll like the result - being a torque tube car, you need a certain amount of dampening back there to prevent gear shear - when you bang a gear, since there are no u-joints or flex to absorb the impact, the only place left is the trans mount - it needs to move a little bit or you will start snapping lower gears or drive shafts or cv joints - something has to give

once even the OEM mount is loaded, you get all the torque applied to it, but the transition can be improved, at the obvious expense of vibration which isn't generally an issue in a race car - stiffer mounts, and torque struts can do this - the torque struts will help, but they can't be completely rigid - a solid mount is going to create a stress point that might not be able to handle it

unfortunately over the years i have learned way too much about how to break a transmission - i don't know anybody who is harder on them than me

I was reading about the new 911 turbo S and they talked about the magnetic-fluid motor mounts. These things can be pliable at idle, but firm up for spirited driving just like the shocks. Wow....pretty high-tech.

I used window 3M weld on an original transmission mount and fab some simple adjustable cable theaters that limit side to side movement. I had a heim jointed torque arm on my track car and it worked great but transmitted way too much NHV for my street ride. I put these theaters on one of the 951 LS2 conversion I did and it worked great not to mention it was easy and inexpensive. With the LSX conversion the torque really forces the tranny to the drivers side under acceleration and eventually will crush the inner CV cage the above mod solved that issue.

yeah - that's why i am working on hydraulic stuff - i have something i just need to fit up to make sure it works for both the trans and the engine - pretty simple really - not new technology - lol - i think the main component is even a porsche part

I ran across this post while looking for something else. For what it's worth, Lindsey Racing has several versions of solid and semi-solid transmission mounts, some of which they designed and build in house. In fact, Lindsey has tons of very cool-looking stuff - I'm surprised we don't hear more about them on this forum. Maybe because most of their stuff is racing-oriented...
