I had the solid AGLA shifter but sent it back due to vibrations. AGLA sent me a left over OEM shifter and I've got that in now. I had to add some rubber wedges (bought at Bed Bad and Beyond) taped to the top to get it a tighter fit. Otherwise it was very loose. But, overall, very little vibration in the shifter now at all. Looks great, AGLA was great to work with and things are good.

Speaking of vibrations though. I recently had a new stereo and FatMat put in. Only the doors and the rear area under carpet were done. Quite a bit quiter but now I've got two big noises. One is a low frequency vibration/harmonic noise coming from my left door. The other is a full rattle coming from the right side of the dash. Any ideas on how to shut those down? Is is the engine mounts or did they not secure everything when the FatMatted the door and put the stereo in? Should I go in and tighten up everything in there or is the something I'm missing. Yes, I know it's a 16 year old car, but the noises are pretty loud passing 2000 RPM and I'd like to quite them down.

I'll snap some picks of mine as well, but looks pretty much just like Dane's.

I paid $75 in total. That included the leather boot ~40, new plastic insert ~10, and core exchange cost ~20, shipping makes up the difference. I used my old plastic bezel and metal clip. Very easy to refit and install.

The quality of the leather is very good compared to others I have seen. My understanding is that AGLA makes the product that rennbay sells as well. If you are good with playing with the leather and a bit of glueing yourself (at the top), it could be an easy DIY. Somehow whenever I get near glue, it ends up in far more places than it needs to be, so for the extra few bucks, I had them to it for me.

yeah - what i am looking for is an exact plug and play, complete with no assembly required (the insert is ok) - i don't even want to give up my existing one - it must not generate any more vibration or noise, and must fit with the OEM rubber inserts

i think i need to call sunset and see what a new one costs

Hello All,

I want to replace my shifter knob with a wooden one. It's been a while since the last post in this and similar threads, so I'm checking to see if there is any updated wisdom out there about the infamous and insidious 'buzz.'

This is what I understand from all that I've read:

The weight of the replacement knob should match the weight of the original.

A rubber dampener must be used between the shaft and the knob. Does anyone know if that is a part that can be purchased from Porsche and what's the part #? When you pull out the old knob, does the rubber come out in such a way that it is reusable?

Alternatives including inner tubes, nubby velcro and rubber 'accordion' pieces have been employed for this. Any updates on their effectiveness? What the hell is a rubber 'accordion' piece?

The replacement knob must have a generous hole -- 18mm x 27mm to allow room for the dampening material between it and the shaft which is 6 mm x 15mm.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Does anyone have a junk OEM knob that I can weigh and use to work with my wooden-knob-guy? Of course I'll post any new info here.

Thanks,

Paul

The knob rubbers <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> do stay behind and are reusable. You could also get them from a dismantler as I doubt 944/968 shifters are in demand.

The old one was in terrible shape and just bothered me every time I had to grab hold of it.
