SHAKE DOWN ON NEWLY ACQUIRED 968 COUPE
#1

I just took deliverey of a 93 coupe which I picked up in North Carolina yesterday and made the 900 miles drive back to Chicago with the car last night. This is the second 968 that I have sourced out of the Carolinas and then drove back to my home in Chicago. I feel that this is a good "shake down" drive when I become very familiar with the specific car.

So, the good news is that the coupe, in Guards red over a tan/black interior, cosmetically, is very good. There is also absolutely no rust on the car. However, I noticed a few things peculiar that I would like to get comment on from the Forum.

First, I noticed that with the engine cold or hot, there is a very light intermitant rattle from the engine. It's light enough in sound to be lifters.....but, sounds more like chain rattle. With that vague a description, can anyone venture a guess as to what it could possibly be. Doesn't sound like a rod knock; however, I have never had any of my Porsches develop rod knock. The rattle is not particularly loud in that you have to be standing right next to the car to hear it. You can also hear it from the interior of the car. Comments please?

The second thing is that there are several minor parts that I will need to source. The first is one of the seals for the rear hatch. This seal is rectangular in shape, about 2x four inchs in size, and is screwed down to the body. There are two of these seals and they are mounted on the body, close to the right and left sides of the body where the hatch seals at the bottom. Perhaps these are seals around the drains (I'm not sure). At any rate, on one of them, the rubber seal has been destoyed along a portion of the seal and the metal skeleton is all that remains. Any idea of what this part is called or a way to source it?

The second part is a cosmetic cover for one of the (4) fasteners that hold the sun roof front release lever in position. The part looks like it may be plastic. Three of the four fasteners have the cover.

Thanks in advance.

Ernie,

The noise might be the timing chain/pads or both. Better check this out first or you are in for a whole lot of hurt.

I have a cab, can' help you on the two parts questions.

Check the parts book on this site and contact Paragon, Pelican or Sunset for a price.

For the hatch seal part you need, any 944 part should work.

I will check around and see if I have one. Last I remember I had both sides.

Egads, get that car's cam chain, sprockets, and Variocam pads checked sooner vs. later.....meaning immediately.

For the hatch seals you're talking about, they're seals for the hatch locking mechanisms. They can be sourced from Sunset Imports in Oregon, not sure about the part number.

TheMirror's statement "meaning immediately" is absolute...trust all of us here when we say you don’t want to experience R&R-ing the cylinder head...much better places to your spend money....
