Scary sound...

I'm about halfway through my tiiming/balance shaft belt/rollers/tensioner/front seals/water pump replacement project, and I included the replacement of the pin that the tensioner arm pivots on, following the advice from another thread. The OP of this thread had his pin snap, causing major engine damage.



Well, as I was tightening in the new pin, I heard a sound that has me a little worried. I couldn't find a torque spec for this pin in the shop manual, so I was just planning to get it good and tight by feel. As I was doing the final bit of tightening, I heard a sound not unlike the sound a very tight bolt makes when you first break it loose. It wasn't a cracking sound (thank God), or anything that sounded like something was actually breaking, more of a creak than anything else. Being in such an uber-critical spot, I'm wondering what I should do. Leave it? Find the torque spec (anybody happen to know it?), loosen it, and torque it? Loosen it a little?



Since the torque spec isn't in the manual, does anybody have a good rule of thumb for what the torque should be? It's about a 10 mm diameter bolt, and accepts a 19 mm socket. Thanks.

It is item 32 on page 15-28 of the manual. 45Nm (33 ftlb) with Loctite 270. It may be just some dried loctite you were crunching thru. I would do it over.

I couldn't find Loctite 270, only 271. In fact, reading the information on the back of the package, there isn't even a reference to 270. I did a quick search on Google, and it looks like the two are pretty much equivalent. 271 is the red, maximum strength stuff. Is 271 OK, or should I search some more to try to find 270?



And do you have any other recommendations as fas as assembly tips for the belt/roller/water pump job I'm in the middle of? One guy recommended Permatex Never-Seize for the water pump bolts. Any other good tips out there? Thanks.

OK, I did some more searching on Google about Loctite 270 vs 271, and found this on an Alfa Romeo forum:



Any of you who have tried to locate Loctite 270 have

probably run into sales people who have never heard of it

and who can't find it in their catalogs. Well here's the

bottom line. According to the Locite technical support

folks, Loctite 270 and 271 are virtually identical. 270

simply has a faster cure time than 271, 3 minutes vs. 10

minutes, and it's a different color. What does all this

mean? Use 271 since it's highly available if you can stand

the seven extra minutes.



Sounds like 271 can be used interchangeable with 270. Any dissenting opinions?

Cloud, I was looking at that part in the PET layout and it looks like there are 2 "O" rings on the shaft. Did the new part come with these on there? I thought it was a strange place for O rings.

The o-rings are seperate part #s. They are an attempt to keep the grease on the shaft in and dirt out. I'm not sure they very successful. I doubt there will be any issues in using 271.

My part did not come with eithr the o-rings, or the two washers. I had to order these from my local Porshce dealer (Paragon couldn't find their part numbers). Interestingly, the part I took out of my car was slightly different. It didn't have the o-rings, or the inner washer, and the shaft was slightly different as well. It's kind of hard to describe the difference without a photo. I'll try to take one if anybody is interested. But the part I ordered from Paragon better matches the diagram in the manual, so I feel good about putting it in my car.



What type of grease would you recommend using on the shaft? Is white lithium OK? Thanks.
