rusty welds on body
#1

I have noticed a small and concerning 'feature' that my car seems to be aquiring in its old age.

Now that it is stripped down, I can clearly see that the paint is starting to flake off some of the body welds and only the welds.

All the panels inside and out are perfect.

I have been told by a reliable source that this is not due to accident damage.

Any idea how this can be treated economically.

Do I have to shot blast and re zinc primer or will a rust killer do the job?

I am not worried about cosmetics as this is on the underside of the car and in areas that are not seen but.....

I just don't want it rusting away on me in the future.

Graham, that is disturbing to discover! The best remedy would be to clean off the rust down to "shiny metal" and rezinc plate the rusted area. this may not be practical or economical to do. When I was in Germany it seemed that everything exposed to the weather would get rusty and I got good results with a product called "rust converter" which was applied over the "shiny metal" cleaned area and left a black, plastic-like finish which was very durable and took paint well. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

It is only on tiny areas so there is no real point repainting the car

If that works then great, I will give it a go.

Perhaps it is just the UK being wet and damp.

You would never see these areas if it wasn't stripped down

Will a rust convertor effect the good paint?
