Road tires for endurance racing
#1

First season race driven in our "grass root" endurance series. The BMW E 30 M3 managed a third in the road tire class. The Yokohamas used felt like.... road tires.... a little wiggly and buttery. Any suggestions for a good tire approaching semi slicks in an application like this? Judging from what I hear from other places the prime candidates would be Kumho MX 15 or Dunlop Sport Maxx.

Pictures from the event can be found here: http://rejsa.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=55723

The quickest car was a Porsche 924 with a SAAB turbo engine but retired after a crash. Lap times was on par with 968s racing in the Porsche cup. Most impressive I find the Volvo 240 in the street tyre class which was not far off 944 S 2 Porsche cup lap times on the above mentioned Dunlops. Porsche cup runs Michelin Cup R tyres. Volvo 240 isn't exactly the image of a fast car...

How are road tires defined over there?

In the US, usually the distinction is whether or not the tires are DOT approved (i.e. approved by the US Dept of Transportation for use on the street). A lot of 'race' tires meet DOT specs, Toyo RA1, 888, Hoosier R6, Michelin Pilot Cup Sport, Kumho V700, 710, etc. I'm guessing these aren't considered road tires for you?
