Rhude Rant #4
#1

Every time I witness this I find myself screaming “you idiot” as I watch, in frustration, novice drivers around me who are either too selfish or too stupid to react properly to the situation.

Case in point- I’m driving down a road with one lane traveling in each direction. Traffics a bit thick and were only moving at about 35mph between lights. I hear sirens from behind and check my mirror. I see it’s an ambo and he is coming my way. I continue to flow with traffic carefully watching as other drivers pull over as he’s making his way to me. He’s now about 5 cars back so I start riding the shoulder a bit when I notice the guy he’s currently behind doesn’t know what to do. The guy in my rear view mirror is moving at about 12mph and has 20% of his car on the shoulder and 80 in lane. The ambo has no where to go as oncoming traffic is to the left. On top of that this guy has about 5 car lengths between him and the cars in front of him because he is moving so slow! The driver of the ambulance gets right on his bumper and finally this dim-witted soul had an epiphany and realized that if he pulls over the noise from the big red truck might stop. So mentally challenged driver #1 pulls off the road and the ambo passes. Everyone else makes way including me and the ambo is increasing speed until mentally challenged driver #2. This idiot actually stops her car. YES, STOPS! Several cars that are in front of her are already on the shoulder and she couldn’t figure out that that’s where she needed to be. The ambo is now at a standstill and can only imagine what she was doing while he sat there sirens blazing right on her bumper probably swinging his arms in the move over motion. Opposing traffic had made way for the ambo to go left and get around her, and he did.

At times, I can’t believe the stupidity I see. Even if these are new drivers, they were passengers first and should have come to the understanding that pulling your car to the side of the road to allow an emergency vehicle to pass is not only simple but pretty serious as it could be a matter of life or death.

that makes me crazy - people refuse to give up their position and pull over

we need a series of PSAs on driving

No, too soft.

My solution in Rhude rant 3 still stands. roof mounted rocket launchers.

I've had two girlfriends ask me the same question 4 years apart on a two lane road with an ambulance approaching in the oncoming lane:

"Why are you pulling over? The ambulance is on the other side of the road."

While I would love to think that the approaching drivers have plenty of space and mental capacity to pull fully out of their lane, reality does not normally reflect these ideal circumstances.

in california, you are required to pull over to the right side of the road and come to a complete stop, regardless of which side of the road you are on, and regardless of which direction the emergency services vehicle is coming from

I believe that's a federal law Flash, we MUST do the same here in Wisc. and Ill.

could very well be a universally accepted thing, and it should be, but all traffic laws are jurisdictional in nature, and governed on a state by state basis

i see this one all the time though too: people stopped at an intersection with an emergency vehicle coming up from behind - still, they fail to pull over and get out of the way

I also pull over as far right as the shoulder allows.

I also let the car in front of me pull back in before speeding up beside him which I've also seen done. Some people are just asking for an accident.

BTW- Same law here in MD. Complete stop and give right of way to emergency vehicles. Now if only that was enforced..

I don't know what the law is in New Jersey, but it doesn't matter to me. I do what makes sense - which is to safely get out of the way, no matter which way the emergency vehicle is traveling.

Come to Dubai and drive on our roads for a while.....you will discovery new levels of idiocy you have never imagined possible, here the concern is not just getting out of the way of the ambulance, but getting out of the way of the twenty psychotic Landcruiser drivers who have tagged onto the back for a free ride through the traffic

Yeah, I've seen that also. A couple of times come to think of it. Often behind fire engines.
