Rhude Rant #5
#1

I rarely have reason to visit other forums. Even though I own 2 Toyotas they’re pretty much just commuter cars and rarely does anything go wrong where I would need a DIY and I’m not interested in modding them.

However during my search for a BMW and now as an owner, I find myself looking through other forums searching for answers. What a rude awakening.

Problem one - Organization. I was amazed to find that one site didn’t even have a classified section. Oh, people were selling stuff. It was in the general section. I left quickly. I found another site and was searching “common problems” with the car. Though I found the thread titled as such, It took about 9 replies before anyone actually gave a list of common problems. The OP listed like 2 items. From there people chimed in with nothing of relevance. The page was several pages long as members continued to add comments that gave no support to the title of the thread. There were about 13 post that read. The E46 has no common problems. SIGH

Problem 2 - titling. When you get members who title threads “ Never do this” or “WTF” or “I’m Pissed” You hae to open the thread to find that its about removing your stereo, a bad ebay purchase or a broken brakeline. If these things were in the general discussion area because someone wanted to rant that one thing. But when they are in a particular sub-category the problem is 2 fold.

1, Even though you start a thread and post the problem, other members carry on the discussion and the thread becomes a resource tool. So when they are properly titled, like “a bad ebay intake” others are able to post in harmony with the title and weigh in on good and bad experiences, list brands and price etc.

2, The guy using the forum to search “intakes” is actually able to find the thread. No one searching brakeline issues is typing in “WTF”.

My final rant would be against lazy moderators/board owners. Ones who allow nasty attitudes, foul business practices and could care less about the organization of their site. If a post on “repairing the AC” is put in the suspension section so be it. If a new member asking for help gets verbally assaulted with all sorts of obscenities, that’s OK too. But should you post something negative about their sponsors your banned.

I use to note how people would often post a thread stating that they need a good Bimmer forum here on the 68 site. Now I understand why. I fully understand.

Whew, for a minute I thought you went to the dark side...

Glad we could ruin your "other forums" experience

I checked out a Nissan forum once and even I, a person whose vocabulary causes drunken sailors to run out of a bar covering their ears , was shocked by the level of personal attacks and name calling COMMONLY found in many of the threads there - it made the various slings and accusations of the old days on ".net " seem like a love fest by comparison..

I've had good luck with the sub forums I frequent on bimmerfourms.
The problem with a "newer" car is lack of true enthusiest's or people who no what they are actually talking about.

That's the great thing about this forum, small customer base, older crowd and less non sense.

Congrats on the new car. I'll have to come down and check it out.

Agree with GermanCarDude. Newer car forums are about blowers, stereos, and tires, and not much else. The best other forum I visit is, believe it or not, for my SO's 02 Honda Odyssey. There are some really helpful folks there fixing their people movers as they age. I've saved hundreds with that forum, and even made a contribution or 2 (typical rxter Rube Goldberg stuff). One guy even put body moldings on his van - seems an odd way to spend money but what the hey - he has one of the coolest Honda vans on the planet I am sure

I've also found the same problem that rhude describes and I only use search on those forums - there is essentially no organization.

Another difference. I only ever go to those forums when I need some technical info whereas I come here to find out what people are up to. Might be a demographic thing. The RX8 forum that I use is populated mostly with guys young enough to be my kids whereas this forum, ehem, err, .....

<i>'rxter' Agree with GermanCarDude</i>. For some odd reason that really cracked me up.

Me too.
Pat makes a good point "The... lack of true enthusiest's or people who no what they are actually talking about. " That ignorance is all over many of those sites.
I cant remember all the sites Ive tried but E46 fanatics and bimmerfest comes to mind.

As the owner of three(!) older BMWs in addition to the 968, my experience pretty much mirrors Porschedude's. I actually find the E46 forum on bimmerfest to be outstanding - very helpful tips on how to work on the car, what tends to go wrong when, an excellent wiki, etc. E46fanatics is also very good, as is xoutpost (for the X5). The E92 forum on bimmerfest, in contrast, is horrible. Nothing but "Ooh, should I get the sable leather to go with the metallic crimson, and what about the bluetooth i-nav link to the central locking option?" Sheesh - 95% of the people on that forum probably don't know where the hood release latch is located. And I have to say, the Chrysler minivan forum is also extremely helpful, and has saved me a lot of moeny over the years. So in general, the old car forums are far superior to the ones dealing with newer models.

Bimmerfest is well organized. I'm now enjoying that site.

Fanatics seems to be full of kids. Every other thread I opened had an argument. Maybe I gave up too quick. I'm still looking to get some of that stuff called patience.

To be honest, I haven't spent that much time on fanatics; I mainly focused on one very long thread describing how to fix/prevent the inherently weak window regulators from failing. I spend 95% of my BMW time on Bimmerfest. But again, the E9X forum is a joke.
