Restoring 968 lettering

Like Bob said, it can be done wrong but if you have the right tools and polishes the scratches will disappear.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Thanks for the offer Jeff. Unfortunately its about a 2800 mile drive to your place

I think I'll try the polish without the orbital and see if I can make any progress.

Start with the finest "grit" polish you can. 3M makes an auto polish that is around the equivalent of 1500 grit IIRC. If you can get something less rough than that to start with (plenty available), you are on the right track. Take your time and don't use a lot of pressure - you can scratch up the area pretty good using too much pressure. Also, don't polish in the same direction - try to be random. Take your time and go slowly. After rinsing off the polish(es), coat the area with wax as you just removed whatever protective finish was there....

Hi

I've lost the number "9". While the number is missing there is a very hard residue left in the shape of the "9". I assume this is the adhesive that is still stuck to the car. Any suggestions on how to get this residue off so I can replace the number with a new one?

Thanks.

Steve

I have a question regarding the 968 decal. Did all years and models have the "968" on the back? My car did not have any when I got it and I see no ghost letters. I purchased a new set, but they are black and probably will not be all that visible on my Aventurine paint. Did these letters com in a polished look too? I think it would look better.

I find a lot of people ask me what model my car is. Their first guess is a 928. Perhaps is a little vane, but I want people to know what I'm driving.

The letters only came in black, but you can buy other colours. I bought a set and found the quality to be poor so I ended up sticking it on my tool trolley.

Have a look here

Maybe you find the quality acceptable.

yes, they all had them, though it was slightly different in early 92 than the rest of the years (squarer edges) - always black as far as i know

i removed mine, as i felt it cleaned up the look, and helped make the back end of the car look wider - also, i didn't want everyone knowing what i was driving - i preferred the mystery - it has started up a number of conversations i've enjoyed quite a lot

Black it is. Thanks. I'll have to wait until it warms up a little. Old man winter is a knocking. I need to wash the beast before I put these on.

Not all the cars had the numbers from the factory. If you have option code 498 without rear model designation, it wasn't supposed to have them. Unless of course someone added them later. I am going to take mine off to match the way it was supposed to be. I don't need no stinking numbers...

ya know - i completely forgot about that code - good catch - i don't think i've ever seen a 968 with it, but plenty of 911s

It's a worthwhile upgrade to me. By my calculations, the 968 badge adds about 28 horsepower at the crank, since people will stop asking me if it's a 944.

lol - the way i see it, by not having the numbers, i get stopped by people asking me if it's the new model, which adds about 100hp, based on today's trends of engine numbers

oh - and it really is a 944, or very nearly was until the last minute a 944S3

but whatever - have fun - i think i saw a vendor that makes chrome ones

I think that only works with the cabriolet. With a coupe I commonly get, "Man, that's the nicest 944 I've seen in a long time." I think people often think my car is older than it is. It reminds me of that review of the 968 CS with Jeremy Clarkston and he bashes the 80's lifestyle while he's wearing Raybans, a fleeced aviator jacket, penny loafers and a permed mullet.

Ahhh, I digress. The real reason for adding the badge is because I need something to do. A year from now I'll be posting about why I'm taking it off.

I'd be interested to know how many there are, but there have to be a few that have it. Mine is the only one I know of so far... I could use the extra 100hp for free so off they come.

Oh, and the permed mullet is killing me. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Of the 2,008 NA 968 cabs, only 6 had the option code 498 rear emblem delete

For some reason, this option is much more popular on the coupes. I'm only half way done with the coupe registry but already have 42 with option code 498.
