Requesting Urgent Technical Info/Help - Thanks
#1

Hi All,

1.

My car is in the shop having follow up work done for my recently installed Nav system (Avic D3). The technician has the factory schematics but is unable to locate any type of (VSS) speed sensor wire etc. to tap into for a pulse on speed data as this should be connected to the Nav system. Some have mentioned that an ABS wire or DME wire could be used for this purpose. Does any one know the specific info of a wire which can be used for this?

2.

Also we want to hook up the illumination wire to the Avic so that it will dim when the headlights are activated. Is this wire simple to locate?

3.

Lastly I am getting an intermittent crackling sound from one of the passenger door speakers (the lower larger round midrange speaker). The technician believes it is the factory amp which is malfunctioning. I have option M490 premium sound and according to the schematics the amp is located under the passenger seat, the schematic has it labelled as "right amplifier" which leads you to believe there is a left amplifier but the schematic does not show this as being the case. I have read info here and elsewhere which states there are two amps? Has anyone here had any speaker issues such as this and how was it rectified

Any help greatly appreciated!

Will a 1994 968 wiring diagram / schematics help? There is one on here if you do a search. If you cant find it I have downloaded a copy and can email it to you.

Thanks

Illumination is easy - tap into the light for the clock or the ash tray, both are right there...

Speed I have yet to get to...thought I had found it under the dash behind the ignition switch - there is a junction of red w/black stiped wires (if I read the schematics right thats the right color combination) but when I tried a wiretap my gal didn't work - not sure if the tap didn't make a good connection or not and my unit is in the shop getting fixed right now, so I can't test it again...

Another option looks like it connects to the alarm(pin 6?) but it looks like it chages color to gray & yellow if IIRC...

3- the 94 and 95 only have one amp located under the passenger seat, the '92 and maybe the '93 have one under each seat.

They are pretty much impossible to see as they are under the carpet so you have to pull the seat to get at them.

I think the speed sensor is located in the gear box.

The speed sensor for the speedo uses the LF ABS sensor. THe signal goes through a converter then to the speedo in the dash. Im not sure where the signal converter is, as you would have to hook up you NAV speed wire after that. Maybe Flash might have some input as to its location.

My Right speaker crackles too. But we eliminated the amplifier when we upgraded to iPod head unit. so I don't think that's the problem.

If you find a solution please post.

"crackling" can be a number of things, but they are pretty easy to track down - they are:

head unit

speaker

connection

amp in the middle of the chain (if you have one)

wiring itself does not produce crackling, and instead makes loud pops

some problems will give themselves away by symptoms related to volume - if the problem gets worse at higher volumes, it is likely a bad voicecoil in the speaker - if it happens the same across all volumes, it is likely a connection - if it doesn't happen down low, and then pops on as you turn it up, it is likely an amp or preamp (possibly the one inside the deck) - if you have knobs, and it happens when you turn it, it's likely the pot in the deck (in the case of one channel problems, this is almost always a balance pot on the same shaft as the volume)

if volume does not give you the answer, you have to go point by point

start at the speaker - insert a known working full range speaker at the speaker location - it really does not matter what kind of speaker for the purpose of the test - it may sound like crap, but as long as it isolates the crackle, it wil be fine

if that did not isolate the problem, then work up the chain to the next link - stopping at any connection

one by one do this until you isolate the problem

hope that helps

Thanks guys! Sounds like we might be in business if we can track down the signal converter then....will let you know what happens.

With regard to the speaker, the sound comes on its own intermittently at any volume and is not produced by adjusting the volume it just happens whenever. The sound stays until you powere off the head unit and turning it on again, until th next episode occurs.

Hi Jay,

Is it the same right front speaker? (larger round lower). The symptoms still occur even after removing the factory amp? Does powering off the head unit have any effect on the crackling sound? I have the premium sound 10 speaker (option M490) do you have this as well?

intermittently? is it not all the time? does it come and go with no changes or inputs from you?

if so, it sounds like a bad solder connection of a component in either the deck or the crossover

Yes it comes and goes seemingly randomly and once it happens I can only make it stop by powering off the head unit. It did this with my now removed blaupunkt and as well with the brand new Avic D3.

Kevin,

I am about to install a D-3 as well.

Regarding the VSS. I believe that I have located the sender.

There are 4 sensors for ABS, one at each wheel. The left front sensor pulse (negative relative to ground) can be picked up on pin # 9 and # 24 (ground) on the DME plug. It is the 8th wire on the top row, 9th from the end. It should be numbered.

Hope this helps you and that someone can confirm that the information is correct. I do not have my D3 yet, but if you try this line and it works or fails; please post the info.

Thanks

Brian

I have JVC KD-NX5000 GPS, and following is the location of wire behind the speedo/tach cluster that I tapped for speed signal (see lower left corner of diagram)

It's been a while so my memory is not fresh (that's why I make diagrams for all my work), but after installation I went through unit calibration

and the GPS was receiving pulse as required by JVC unit.

I reluctantly used 3M "T" splice terminal (with blue plastic casing), as it seemed the only practical way after going all the way to relay box.

Not everybody's preferred method, I know, but hope this helps.
