replacement parts for the 968 series
#1

I have a problem with the ignition lock cylinder. It is sticking and needs replacement. This is where I run into problems. The only parts available are the OEM replacement that will require me to use two keys (door and ignition) in the future. The lock cylinders listed in the PET that Porsche previously would provide with a new key based on your VIN number are no longer available according to Sunset Porsche. Several other PET options are also no longer available.

Simultaneously with this problem, the shop gathering parts to repair my damaged bumper have been having trouble sourcing OEM bumperettes. Looks like the best bet at this time is a 4-6 week wait from Germany - if available.

This highlights a problem that we have mentioned before, particularly Flash. Porsche is clearly ramping down production and stockage of OEM/NOS parts for this series. Perhaps, with the low production numbers of the 968 this is not that big of a surprise. The problem we face as owners is what to do as this problem grows. And as my experiences just today seem to suggest, this problem will grow.

There are several salvage yards the have a large stock of many 968 parts. Many are in very nice shape and with a little TLC and cleaning up can serve to replace parts that are no longer available. Even diffent colored interior parts can be re-colored to match.

Can a good locksmith re-key the new ignition lock so that it matches your door? I had an Audi 10 years ago that had obviously had locks replaced, as I had three keys for the doors, ignition and trunk. I took it to a locksmith and $75 later, everything worked on one key. Definitely worth it.

Most of the aftermarket Porsche sources sell a Lock re-keying kit with tumblers. Rekeying your doors to match the ignition is the easiest. Hardest part is the R&R of the door handle. Once it's out though, a single phillips screw holds the tumbler carrier in place. Same for the rear trunk lock. I have never rekeyed an ignition in this series Porsche. But if the tumbler can be removed easily (check your old unit once it's replaced), you might be in luck and can just rekey it.

Tony is correct, almost any locksmith should be able to re-key the new cylinder to match the original locks. In fact I've done this myself a few times and while its tedious getting all the pins in the right order (I used the old lock pins) it's pretty easy to do.

On the 968 parts issue, Porsche only has to commit to 10 years of supplying parts for out of production vehicles. In fact, they can stop producing replacement parts once they have sufficient inventory SOMEWHERE within their parts network for a percentage of overall production. While I don't have specifics, I do have first hand experience with "lot" purchasing of NOS Porsche parts. What typically happens is towards the end of the calendar year Porsche circulates a "lot" quantities SLOB list (SLow moving and OBsolete). This list is offered to dealer's parts departments and other large wholesale buyers. I have purchased 944 and 968 NOS from wholesalers that bought much larger quantities and wanted to off load inventory that was not core to their business. Anyone need 15 saddle brown right rear seat speaker grills for a coupe?

I have had amazing "Luck" (?) getting NOS parts out of Porsche Germany thru my dealer, O'Daniel P/A of Ft. Wayne, IN. Got some fairly "obscure" stuff too... like a rear engine bay vanity cover! Who would have thunk those would still be in stock!

Roger, head of their Porsche Parts Dept., has been able to source most stuff in practically no time flat from Germany for me over the past month. Longest wait from order to delivery at my door was two weeks!

260-435-5380 or web at odanielauto.com Ask for Roger in Parts... super nice, super fast! And, he checks all other Porsche USA locations to see if anyone has the part here before going to Germany for it...
