Key Replacement
#1

Not that I or anyone that I know would need this service but, would a dealer be able to make a key without having one to copy or without having the key code? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

TIA,

Josh

I too went to the dealer and with my v.i.n. the key was ordered. I took some documentation that I owned the vehicle just in case, but it was not necessary.

VIN and proof of ownership is all you need at your local Porsche dealership.

Roger that! Add $50 and a few days latter you get a key with out the lighted portion. Don't forget to ask them to provide you with the key code.

I have needed another key (lost my 2nd key) so I was about to go to the Porsche dealer to get another and looked in Performance Products catalog and on page 270 there is an illuminated blank key ($26.95) for a 968 or a "genuine" key blank ($9.95) for a 968. So if one takes the blank to a shop with a key duplicator, viola new key. Am I missing something here?

A lot of shops will not cut a key like the 968's, rather only ones they sell. I'd ask around first to make sure.

I purchased my blank from Porsche ($5.42) and a small key fob ($1.78) and had it cut at Ace Hardware ($2.00).

Ok, I'm going with the blank from Performance Products. My key has the Porsche crest but it is not colored. The one in the catalog shows a colored one. Guess one has to order the battery also. That's another thing my current key won't do, the light no longer works. I know the LED replacement thing but a regular light will do. I don't want to "zap" someone although there are some SUVs that I would like eliminate when they are parked next to me. Am I anal retentive about this car or what?

My mistake. I thought the question was about getting a new key cut without a code or an original to copy from. The only time I would go for a dealer cut key is if you had to a) replace locking cylinders with new, <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> replace numerous pins in your existing cylinder due to wear or c) key is worn. With that said, my problem was b & C so I elected to get a new key and reworked all cylinders by using the key as the master and checked pins for wear. A pin which raised up above the housing (could cause binding in the lock assy when attempting to rotate the assy) were replaced with a new pin. This was not hard but was time consuming. You will also need access to several different size pins to determine the correct configuration. Once known, you can purchase the size and qty required and replace all of them.
