I went retro. Just replaced them with OSRAM 2821 Long Lift bulbs a couple days ago.

I was hoping to post this and report success, or lack of, at the same time.  I am however confident, so here's a preview .....

Removed the dash as per various instructions.... thanks to all for the various bits of advice.

The old reflective paint was pretty degraded so I used acetone to remove it.  You can see the light tunnel on the left with the paint removed looks clear and unscratched so I'm confident it will improve with a good reflective coat.  So then cleared all three.

WARNING ... don't leave the acetone on the plastic for a long time else it may start to dissolve it.  Just put some acetone on a tissue and hold it against the paint for a few seconds, then rub it around and have a look at what has been achieved; you'll soon work out how much and how long etc.  DON'T leave the acetone on the black plastic for any time at all as it eats that away pretty rapidly. (I suspect the black plastic and the clear perspex are significantly different in the way they respond to acetone, as the perspex seemed unaffected but I didn't want to take the risk however the black plastic was almost instantly dissolving).

Fairly straight forward bit of masking and then a few coats of chrome paint which I hope has created a mirror finish underneath.  I remember doing this on my 944 using silver paint and it made almost no difference, so i'm hoping for an improvement with chrome.

The astute amongst you will have noticed my odometer gears from last week, and thus the reason I cannot report whether or not the instrument lights have improved.  I have been sent the wrong odometer gear, so I'm waiting for the correct one before reassembling the instrument panel Sad

Well done !      I recently replaced the reflective coating on mine with aluminum foil and replaced the bulbs using 194's.  It turned out great.  Love it!

Quote:Wonder why the previous owner did not connect the foot well lights to the door switches

so they only lit when the door was opened
Hi Waylander, I trust all is well ..... Footwell lights ?? Is that a coupé thing or post 1993 thing? I've been upside down in my footwell a few times and seen no evidence of lights ....

Oh and the acetone

Lots of plastic bits in out cars are made with ABS, same as LEGO bricks

Acetone melts ABS with out altering its molecular structure, for us owners of these old cars that is a very handy think to know

To repair lots of parts on my car like cracked door boxes, dash trims, headlamp frames and so on

I melt a few Lego bricks in Acetone in a jar that can be sealed tight, this creates a sort of thick black paste, you can have this as runny or thick as you need, if you then use this like you would epoxy resin, it will melt all the surrounding plastic together and when its fully evaporated the Acetone the ABS has returned to its original state

So its like the plastic was never broken, try it for yourselves it really does work, I have made new locating pins on my door boxes using this method, repaired facia parts all sorts of trim parts,

But it has to be ABS to work

As for the floor lights, they were mentioned in a post further back, its something Im considering doing

Hi Waylander, very interesting re acetone .....

"To repair lots of parts on my car like cracked door boxes, dash trims, headlamp frames and so on "........ and the hooked plastic hangers for the glove box??  Mine both snapped at the same time a few weeks back; really took me by surprise.

All depends if they are ABS

I repaired my glove box, made two new stops out of the corners of a cheap plastic toolbox,

Just needed the preformed 90 degree bends

Well, ok , at 8 he may be too old for this , but maybe they make it in a larger scale  B)

Waylander was referring to my footwell lights - they're aftermarket LED strips (previous owner installed) in the footwell that come on whenever headlights are on.

Ah, okay, but I don't really follow the logic.... but also I don't know the intensity of the lights. I'd be inclined to power the footwell lights from the interior stream, so they would come on with the open doors and then dim out after a short while. Not a criticism, just a thought.
