The hood has a spider web like effect under the first layer of the clearcoat. I really need to have the hood repainted, They will strip the hood down and repaint so it will look original. The rest of the car could stand to be repainted but only because I want it to be better, not because it really needs it. My wife and I really like the new Porsche color Basalt Black and are thinking of having the entire car repainted. What do you think?



Should I repaint the entire car? If so should I do it in the original Black or should I go for the Basalt? What do you think re-painting will do to the value in the future?



P.S. a good friend owns a paint shop, so cost is not an issue.

My feeling has always been that a repaint - no matter what color - will slightly degrade the value - but then again, that's only to collectors who may be placing a certain value on "original" paint when looking to purchase a car. That being said, and cost being a non-issue, you may as well go for the full respray with Basalt Black...it is a cool color and is at least a genuine Porsche color. And, while we're piling on, my black 944 needs a complete respray really bad, Basalt's fine with me too! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> He wouldn't have to clean the sprayer to switch colors!

5k mile car, keep original. Over 50k miles, a repaint won't affect the value any significantly than the mods you install. Basalt Black is very beautiful, but very expensive to aquire. I looked into it as an option for my car.

Agreed.



My approach to buying a car is the same as RZ's, for my enjoyment. If you take pride in the fact that its close to original then by all means keep it that way. Schedule an appointment with a professional detailer. The pro's can work wonders with various chemicals. Now if everytime you look at the car you say to yourself, i wish it was basalt. Then the answers obvious.



PS. Am I the only one who has no idea what this basalt looks like? Which car is it currently used on?

Agree completely. In fact, the spider web paint problems are hurting the value and a complete repaint would probably increase value. The real hurt from paint on ahigher mileage car are the fears of a future owner that it hides shoddy repair or indicates accident damage. If you plan to sell the car someday (and don't we all if it really comes down to it...), document the job with pictures and receipts. That way you can show the reason for the paint and the quality of the work.

Chances are I’ve seen it and didn’t know what I was looking at.

If you're going to change the factory delivered color, just make sure it's done right. The value will be lost because you changed from the delivered color. I don't think you need to worry about the documentation. Just keep the receipt of who did it.



If you sell the car someday to a restoration nut, they're going to make it just like factory anyway...

chaning colors bugs me unless you yank the engine and shoot the engine bay at the same time - i'm picky about the entire car being shot the same color



as for value, that's subjective, like others have said - i wouldn't sweat it unless in was a mothballed car - these cars really have no value, and a clean one, repaint or not, will generally sell for more than a faded original one
