Recommend gearbox rebuilder?
#21

I would guess $ 3 K, + , simply based on my vague recolection of the gears repair one of our old 968 members had done many many moons ago and I think it was just over $ 2 K at the time

i paid $3500 to get mine done, thinking i had a bad pinion bearing, and freshened everything up in side while i was there.  then i paid another $1500 2 weeks later, thinking i got some bad parts, and replaced every bearing again, just to be sure.

Just looked at my pinion repair invoice : $ 350 for parts , $ 1,700 for labor , but that was at a rate of $ 75 / hr way back in 2003 ...sheesh, does anyone even remember $ 75 hourly rates anymore ?! The lowest rate around here these days , at just about any reputable shop is $ 150 / hr and goes up from there . I think the local dealer charges $ 225 / hr , but good luck going there with a 968 transmission and expect anyone to even know what the heck kind of car it is, lmao .

So I'd say $ 1,800 for a pinion job by a Getrag specialty shop is a damn good price !

You can get a rebuilt transmission and installed for around the same price ( $ 1, 800 ) Wow, that's unbelievable, I would have thought $ 4,000 for just the part .

If you haven't had the work done yet, I would recommend a shop a little closer in Westmont, Il.  Mark, owner of CarsPlus rebuilt my 6 speed about 4-5 years ago due to the pinion bearing problem.  We have previously had Porsche Club meetings there and usually has 4 - 5 Porsches in the shop being worked on.  Also worked on the variocam.  No issues with any work done on my 93 coupe.

Any gearbox (pinion issue) re-builders in the North East?  I have a '93 with 51K on it that starting to make noise from the rear end.  I did find a couple of re-builders that have them to order.  One each in Georgia and California.  They would both about 3400 for a rebuilt unit exchanged.

There is a good discussion on here, a lift is an excellent way to diagnose the noise.

Hi,

Not sure which LSD RS Barn (Pete) is installing, but I purchased the O.S. Giken from him and it transformed my car.

Pete is a great guy, and one of the former owners of this site.

I would call Kevin Gross in Massachusetts  http://www.catellusengineering.com/

He did a great job on my AOR for my 951.  When I picked it up he said he could do the 6 speeds no problem, has all the special tools etc.
