Recommend gearbox rebuilder?
#1

Apparently the only other 968 owner here in Madison is having gearbox issues. A "grind-y Cessna prop motor" type sound even in neutral, so apparently one or more bearings have failed, or worse. Pete at RS barn had no particular recommendations for shop to do this PITA type work.do any of you know a guy or shop here in the states with strong experience on our six speed manual gearbox that I can recommend?

Thanks

california motorsports is arguably the best on these boxes.  that's pretty much all they do.

By gearbox, do you mean transmission? Labor intensive job and Max may not want to do it? Don't get me wrong, because Max is fantastic, but I had a problem with mine and he didn't want to get involved with it. Kevin Gross in Stowe, Mass. may be a choice and I have some other possibilities that I can look up for you if you want?

Redline Motorsports in Scottsdale did the gearbox, along with the clutch and pinion bearing in my car for the PO and it has run fine for me.

Also look into Chris Cervelli in Denver, much closer to you.

Rap, Max replaced mine as well, with a used trans. He just didn't want to do a re-build. My impression is that is what MLB was inquiring about? I would never "dis" Max, as he's my mechanic too.

Right, ive heard nothing but excellent feedback about the talented Max. But as noted, this type of work is a pain and a lot harder to make a profit (called keeping the lights on) than swapping in another working unit.

first, i don't know the quality of work on gearboxes from any of the others listed, so i have no comment one way or the other.

setting up gearboxes is almost an art form.  it takes incredible patience and attention to detail.  failing to do that results in short lifespans, noise, and clanky running.  i would be extremely careful about having any general mechanic set up a box.  in over 30 years of doing this, i have only met 2 that could actually do the job right.  the rest could put one together, but didn't really have the chops to truly nail it.

best to really vet whomever you want to use.

Not sure about any other components of the transmission but as far as the pinion bearing repair is concerned , Ken's SportTech  in Campbell Ca has ( or had, at the time I had my pinon fixed over eleven years ago ) a reputation as one of the most experienced and best shops in the country for 968 repairs - they did more than a dozen 968 pinion bearing repairs with 100% success rate.. as in no subsequent failures requiring a second fix a couple of years later, hich has been known to happen.  To date, my 968 also runs flawlessly ( in that particular respect ) so I can certainly vouch for them, but clearly far away from WI, no clue about their ability with synch gears pr other transmission issues,  although logic would dictate  if they do pinions that well, they're probably very good with all else, and last but not least , no idea if they're still in business or if the same mechanics are still there, etc, etc..

For one with limited mechanical understanding, what would be the difference between rebuilding a gear box and putting a new (used) transmission in?

a properly set up box will be very tight.  a used box would be sloppier.  nothing wrong with a used box, but new parts are better, IF it's set up right.

Rap, a used (new) transmission is basically a swap with another (preferably lower mileage) transmission versus a complete tear down and rebuild of an existing transmission with new parts, etc. Much more time consuming... but as flash says, you probably end up with a tighter box! A transmission "rejuvenation"! LMAO!

Guess one would have to feel the difference between the two to appreciate this.
I still have the old transmission hanging around cuz I'm a pack rat. What's it cost to rebuild the gear box?
