rear-view mirror

After 13 years my interior rear-view mirror has a worn spot in the ball-and-socket joint - right at the place I'd like the mirror to stay, of course.



Anyone have a trick for tightening it up? Slip a piece of saran wrap in the joint?

Swap yours with one of the UK guys with a RHD car?



Turn the mirror upside down and use it that way?

LOL! the RHD swap is an excellent idea! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I actually tried variants on the "turn it over" suggestion when I re-glued the post to the windshield ... but to no avail. It's new mirror or some kind of shim at this point...

i have the same problem. It seems to be ok when i actually set it so that it's in a position where i can't see and if falls to rest where i want it. I was just dealing with it before, but just recently it has started to rattle. I think i may just get a new one. Anybody know a price on these?

I hate ot admit it, but I bought a new rear view mirror for about $14 at AutoZone. I could not justify the price of an OEM mirror and I really don't notice a difference. It is a clean design and nice and clear. I think it was made in Mexico. I did see VW mirrors that are very similar to Porsche mirrors and were cheaper. Probably made in the same factory, but stamped VW.

I replaced my inside mirror with one that has auto-dimming and a compass. In my view, a great update.

Is there a prefered method of removing the mounting piece, from the old mirror, from the glass?

Mine does not give with some pressure and I'm concerned about damage to the windshield.

The glue is not a problem, it is the metal piece that is glued to the glass.

I'll give it a try.

Like Anchorman, I decided to update my mirror with an auto-dimming/compass model. It's a great update, here's a picture:

I left on the original tab, in case the car ever needs to be returned to stock. The mirror looks really low in the picture because I had to hold the camera up out of the sun. It doesn't look nearly that low in the driver's seat.

The new mirror has no wiggles on its own, only road wiggles on rough surface. OEM for me.

Taking care of these small things makes the driving experience even better.
