What Kind of Headlights???
#1

Sylvania's catalog says our cars use a 9004 headlight capsule, but tonight I took out my OE bulb and it ain't no capsule ... has a flat metal disk at the base and three terminals that mate to the electrical connector.

Is there an aftermarket replacement headlight, or can we only use an exact-match OE type replacement?

I am struggling to find it, but as I recall it was the H4. I believe it also has an "900X" designation, but need someone to confirm.

I have converted all my cars to the Sylvania Silverstar or Silverstar Ultra bulbs. No-brainer, easy upgrade, seems to be the best halogen bulb out there without going down the "exotic" lighting path.

The bulb in the car should have an "H" or "900X" marking on it? I've seen 9003/H4 designations and some confusion over 95 vs. all other years.

the sylvania silverstars really aren't that great of a bulb. They're severly lack in bulb life(the ultras are an improvement here). The biggest issue, however, is the blue coating on the bulb. This blue coating is used to create the white, higher color temp appearance. Unfortunately, it does this by filtering out lower k wavelenghts.

Long story short, it sacrafices total lumen output for that color.

If you want a good bulb, try to find some osram silverstars. Same idea, but they don't have the blue filter on the bulb, so overall light output is much better.

Hmm... I thought Osram in the US is Sylvania. Had not noticed a blue coloring on the bulbs I've installed. Maybe I'm missing something?

may be the same company, and they're similar bulbs, but the osram silverstars lack the blue filter which makes them a much superior bulb

I went to Silverstars from conventional halogen bulbs and noted substantially brighter output and more neutral color.

Several years ago, on a previous vehicle, I had gone from OEM to Sylvania Silverstars. To compare the difference, I changed only one side and then directed the lights onto my garage door. I could barely tell the difference, and no one that didn't know which side had been changed could tell. I never changed the other side, just kept the Silverstar as a spare.
