Rack Play
#1

This sounds like an interesting topic.....

I installed new bushings in my rack because I had some play in my front end and it seemed maybe my rack was moving some. I bought a Derin bushing for the slotted drivers side and went with standard for the pass side. After I got it all wrapped up I checked for play and could still feel some coming from the rack side of things. I thought it was the inside tie-rod end, but when I pulled back the boot, I could see the movement coming from within the rack.

I thought the rack was a solid toothed bar and the left and right ends could not move independently of one another??

Any ideas on what is going on here? How is the round shaft coming out of the rack body held to the rack?

Cloud....you rebuilt your rack, maybe you have an insight. HELP.

Hmmm... Not sure I have much to offer here. You're right, the two halves of the rack should not move independently. The steering gear assembly is held securely in the tower casting, and should not have any play. But of course, if the gears or any of the bearings in the gear assembly are worn, this could cause some play. Not sure how to pinpoint which component could be the culprit, though.

The world's expert on these steering racks is Travis at Rennbay. He's a great guy, without whom I could never have completed my rack rebuild. You might want to give him a call. Good luck.
