Questionable dimensions
#1

Though I'm not a carpenter, I like to be as sure as possible about measurements and specifications all playing nicely before I make a purchase.

So I pulled out the 993TT calipers I'm getting ready to mount up and figured I'd measure the dimension between the brake pads just to make sure the 993 2-piece rotors (322x32mm) I'm about to order will in fact fit.

What a surprise to see the measurement is only about 31mm (between the caliper hard points NOT pad to pad). I measured it over and over to make sure. I don't get it. Am I expected to "turn" the new rotors before they're installed??? I'm sort of stumped at this point.

I've seen that a zillion others have done the Big Red conversion on 944's and 968's, but now I'm wondering if the 322mm diameter will fit.

What the heck?!

are you sure the pistons are fully extended?

Do you have the brackets to mount them to your struts?
Also did you reverse the cross over pipes?

That's all that's needed other than he rotors. Nothing really speacial.

Flash- The pistons are fully compressed allowing the pads to rest up against the caliper. The measurement I took was from the inside of the caliper (not the pads), the inner-most dimension where the rotor would have to fit between. I don’t know what else to call these flat spots other than a “hard point”. Since they are a part of the caliper and don’t move, I figured it would be the best and most logical place to measure.

I did measure the dimension between the pads and it is the same as between the hard points. In other words, with the pads fully seated they sit at the same dimension as (or even with) the hard points (apx 31mm). I hope all of that makes sense.

PorscheDude- I do have Kokeln adapters and new mounting hardware. I haven’t swapped the cross-over tubes yet simply because I’m not yet convinced these calipers are going to work.

I tried to test-fit one of the 993.351.044.01 (304x32mm) rotors I already have on hand into the caliper, like it would normally sit if installed on the car, but it was too thick to fit by about 1.5 to 2mm.

Time for an adult beverage and quiet time for contemplation.

Sorry to say, but I think you have got the wrong calipers, maybe they are from the 993TT, but it seems to me these are the rear calipers.
I have just made the same masurement as you did on the front calipers, and the distance between the hard point is 35mm.

Here is a link to some pictures of 993TT front and rear calipers and rotors.

You can easily see the difference in the two last pictures.

Thanks Erk, you are absolutely right as it turns out. After monumentous research efforts and trans-continental phone calling I've discovered the calipers I have on hand are actually 993TT rears. With that said, my next step is to see if I can fit them to my car and then purchase Big Reds for the front to match.

What a total PITA to come to this rather dejecting conclusion. All is not lost however since I hope to fit 993TT calipers on all four corners now. Has anybody done THAT before???

Thanks all for the input, questions, and recommendations. Much appreciated!!!

Now to find a set of 993TT front calipers.
