Previous Owner Post
#1

As I was working on the car tonight, fixing my stripped out sunroof gears, I came across an odd sight. After reading all the documentation and maintenance history that came with the car it is apparent that my previous owner suffered from a continual rattle coming from the hatch. He had it into the shop 2-3 times to have it looked at. Their/His solution? A piece of cardboard wadded up and stuffed between the body and the plastic sunroof motor cover <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . A quick look over the cover revealed that the three screws along the top were missing and probably contributing to/causing his rattle.

Anyway, what are some of your "favorite" things that you have found out your previous owner has done? Any big surprises?

I feel pretty lucky to only have this one thing to report about my car's previous owner after 5 years of my ownership (besides some nitpicky things here and there).

He, or his installer, put in new speakers and a head unit but did not bother to use the screws when putting the door panels back together, instead he used dabs of clear caulk. I had to order just about all new screws and washers for both door panels and it took me about 8 hours to clean off all of the caulk and to put everything back together. Luckily no permanent damage was done.

My PO installed O30 sway bars, big reds, B&B exhaust, Kenesis Wheels, rebuilt the transmission and kept every record.

The best used car I ever bought.

I see what you mean. U got a great car!

My PO also kept good records and I was able to call the previous mechanic and have him read off dates and repair works. She, did however leave me a bunch of CDs, lip gloss, lip stick and eye liner under the seats.

I keep looking for the Porsche Part number on that piece of cardboard because I'm "sure" that my PO "never" used cheap pieces of scrap material lying around to provide a temporary solution to an easy to resolve problem.

That should come in handy for drag night...

my previous owners installed:

on the blue car (which had 22k on it):

uber rare eibach/tech art progressive lowering springs

yamaha 4x6 rear speakers

infinity reference 5.25" front speakers

sony deck (i wonder what i did with that?)

on the white car (keep in mind it only has 14k on it):

ripped out the 10 speaker system and stuck in garbage

installed a twin 10" subwoofer in the storage boxes

removed the dead pedal with a grinder

removed the glove box light

left out a LOT of door panel screws and such

left the hardware of both seats loose

installed the wrong balance belt

lol - now what i have done..............

The PO's license plate on my car had been HOCKYDOG - and it showed with the amount of dog hair in the car - although it was clear he did vacuum it frequently. However, when I pulled the dashboard out, I was amazed to see how much hair had gotten into those remote, and otherwise inaccessible, places. I'm proud to report that the car is now totally free of dog hair.

Instead of replacing the vacuum operating heater valve coming off the engine..... the previous owner had an off and on water valve. Hell, it probably took more time and money to go this route than buy the $15 correct valve.

You, more than anyone Bob, would understand that these were merely methods of reducing weight.

relied on the expert advice of Buddy Lazier's team chief mechanic, who subsequently opened a repair shop and worked on, among other cars, this 968 to tell him during a road test that the jet engine whine he heard was perfectly normal and had absolutely nothing to do with a faulty pinion bearing..

after I bought the car "as is" and had the infamous pinion problem confirmed, the PO sent me a check for the cost of repair ! How's THAT for a stand up guy ?! The world should be full of folks of such character .

My PO left me her reputation with the local Porsche dealer. When I took the car in for service, the service manager looked at the car looked at me and then said "You bought THAT women's car!!!! Thank God. We now have a sane person to deal with".

It seems the PO also liked her dope. When I brought the car home and gave it a good cleaning, I vacumed up enough "bud" to roll 2 or 3 joints. Nothing beats "hotboxing" in a new 968. She also left me with a few mechanical issues that were unresolved so we agreed on a discounted purchase pruice to cover the estimated repair costs.

I have not heard the term "hotboxing" in years, thats funny.

Not to get off topic, but I probably dated myself with the hotboxing reference. Although the kids today still do it. My son and couple of his friends were doing it in his car inside my garage when I came home unexpectedly. I am still amazed that they didn't asphixiate themselves in the process.

Dead pedal is the spot to the left of the clutch pedal.

My BMW 740iL driver's seat began to sink back on the right hand side. When it became unbearably uncomfortable to drive, I removed the seat and found that the PO had repaired a broken frame with a strip of wood held on by zip ties.

Nice! Did they also use an upside down shopping cart over a fire as a barbeque grill? I assume you could also post your "mystery brackets" here as well.
