The "968 Owner"- who is he/she?
#1

After seeing someone ask a question over at the CarreraGT board at Rennlist, wondering what the C-GT owners did for a living, it got me wondering- what do 968 owners do to fund the p-car(s)?

The C-GT responses abounded with doctors, lawyers, financial 'people', etc.

Got me wondering what kind of a cross-section of the world we have driving the 968?

I am a pharmaceutical sales rep and actually borrowed from my 401k to acquire the car. I paid $22 and change for mine, which is about the same as the sticker price on my company provided Chevy Impala. I think it is a matter of choices. If I gave you $22,000 what would you do with it? I would buy another 968! I could have spent more an got a Boxster, but I like the 987 and they are still out of range. I could get a used 911, but I worry about maintenance and the ruggedness of driving one. The 968 satisfies all my needs. It is dependable, comfortable, shiny and rare. I like being the only one in my local area with such a gem. Where I live mini-vans are a dime a dozen. I am 35 and single and hope the girl I meet will enjoy the car, or at least enjoy the fact that I enjoy it so much. Let's hope she can't drive stick!!

I am a Project Director for an engineering consulting firm. Most of my practice consist of environmental restoration work. I'll turn 60 in December. I liked the 968 from the first time I drove one and looked for about 6 months to find the one I eventuually bought. I have been contemplating what I would replace it with when the time comes. It is my daily driver so when we finally get to that point where reliability starts to become a question, I'll look for a new daily drive, most likely a Caymin.

It is nice to have something that is relatively rare and still, after 125K miles and 13 years, looks beautiful and runs like the day it was built. Northern California is rapidly becoming "Hybrid World" so between the hybrids, VTECS, minivans, and SUVs it is nice to be different.

And I am a retired Army Artillery Officer (previously a Helicoptor Mechanic before getting a commission via OCS during the Vietnam War). My 968 owner friends run the gamut from Doctors and Engineers to Housewives. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Duh- my own post and I don't even answer my own question...

Started out playing at the financial advisor/investment thing while I was in college, and had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a pre-season with a pro hockey team (IHL- sinced rolled into the AHL- not the NHL for you hockey-fans); I grew up in Michigan, what do you want?

Got bored with the financial world and joined the military (isn't that what everyone does when they're bored!?). Spent some time in the Special Operations community before wrecking my back and getting discharged.

Came home, went to the local police academy with the plan to 'protect and serve', but after graduation ended up getting an offer from a security company instead. So now I'm a Security Contractor (best example that everyone's heard of is that I'm one of those icky, evil Blackwater-types , but I work for a different company).

Can't complain- only work 6-8 months out of the year, have the mortgage paid for the year in a couple months' worth of work, have plenty of time to spend with my CARS, play the stock market while I'm home, and I get to travel all over the world doing 'fun stuff'.

And I'm not even 30 yet... what to do, what to do with the rest of my life!!??

Full-time college student, working on starting up my own small business while working in retail as well. Track stuff gets expensive.

I know I'm a newbie to these cars, but it's a great community made up of great people.

I am a partner in a graphic design company. It's challenging and demanding which makes me appreciate the time I spend driving my 968.

The military backgrounds are interesting... I served for 11 years as an armor and transportation officer in the army before leaving to enter education. After graduate school I taught high school history for a while and then had to opportunity to become a web-based history curriculum developer. I am very lucky to be in a small education technology division within a large company (SAS). Dream job in a way. Trips to the national archives for research, attending and presenting at national history and technology conventions, and just spending lots of time with my favorite subject - and getting paid for it! Our resources are now finding new uses in the fast-growing 'virtual school' concept that most states are begining. Exciting stuff.

As for my second favorite subject - I was Porsche nut from the begining. My first was a '77 911S that I had as a young lieutenant in Germany.

I am an equity analyst/assoc. portfolio manager for a boutique money management firm. It is fun and keeps me busy and entertained. The car is actually a hand me down from my father, otherwise I would still be in the Miata. Certainly a nice upgrade, although the Miata was fun too.

I am a chemist for a large pharmaceutical company. 56 and counting the years to retirement. I've been a Porsche fan since my early 20s but this is the first time I've had the resources to actually own one. Soon to become an empty nester. My youngest graduating from college next month. Like all of you, I love this car and enjoy doing small fix-up customizing projects on it. I also have been enjoying the comradiery of the local PCA group here.

I'm a fleet maintenance manager at a large waste disposal company. My wife who is the primary driver is a nurse at a cosmetic surgery clinic. We bought the 93 Cab in '98 to replace her worn out commuter car. The 968 was a daily driver until Dec of 06 when it got 107k miles on it. Have been collecting lots of parts and plan to do a lot of work withing the next few months. Side note: when I do the Ice Shark battery/headlamp cables and Euro headlight upgrade, I plan to make photos since the 968 is different than 944. Having not posted much of anywhere, is it easy to post photos here? I am assuming here is better than Rennlist.

Semi-retired, after 30 years of corporate Labor Relations (read "Union Busting"). Fun with Teamsters, Machinists Union, UAW, UBEW, UMW, and esp. the United Steel Workers! Never lost an election in 30 years... retired while I was ahead in "The Game". Vote for "Most Interesting People" goes to The Teamsters (Think Jimmy Hoffa). Vote for the "Nicest People" goes to the Machinists Union. Vote for the "Most Dramatic People" goes to the UAW.

Of course, that changes from region to region!

BUT...Porsches came first... started with a 1968 911L, and still going!

Great topic -- and good to know more about everyone before Hershey, for those who are going!!! Im a sales rep for the software division of HP in the federal market. Spent most of my life supplying IT stuff to DOD and 'other' agencies and to telecom co's. Daily driver is my trusty company Taurus -- had not owned a car for decades. Had a nice commission check two years ago and bought Baby on a whim on eBay. Everyone wants to know about her, especially other Porsche owners. I'm single and blonde and Baby matches my eyes, so she's been lots of fun. Would be great to meet a guy who appreciates my Baby as much as I do....and become a twin 968 family! There'd be no arguing about 'investing' in the next upgrades for the fleet! Although I'm now thinking I *need* to have a vintage 911 as another fun car, a Cayenne as a daily driver....and a bigger garage.

Good topic. I bought my car when I was 19 in college. I worked for a commercial brokerage through college and now that I have graduated from the University of South Carolina I am back in St. Pete, FL doing commercial real estate. My family is in the exotic repair / race business. As you may have seen in my sig, I have an 86 factory wide body race car (3.4 race motor) that is currently going under major rehab. I am hoping to have this car below 1900 lbs and someday a 3.8 motor. That car will be set up to race in HSR and I will also do PCA, however it probably won't fit well into any certain PCA class. The 968 is good for me now. It's my daily driver, great car. In the near future I want to just buy an F 150 or something similar and then start working on "my creation." I have a 911 SC shell sitting around. That car will be an ultimate sleeper someday. Narrow body, turbo motor with no turbo wing. I would like to get that car well below 2500 lbs with a/c and full interior. I have been a P car fan every since I can remember. The more exotic stuff is nice, but there's nothing like Porsche reliability and power.

Wow... blonde hair, blue eyes, single, and looking....

I think I can actually HEAR the gears turning in the heads of the single members of this board as they try and craft the perfect PM...

And those that were not going to Hershey have just found a reason!!!

Porsche- bringing hot women to regular men since the 1950s!!

I re-read Dave's inquiry and I'll answer the question for everyone - we own Porsche 968's for our 'Living".

However, I also make enough money to live on and finance the 968 as a Univeristy of Idaho Professor or Agronomy. I'd also like to hear from the racing folks on this topic, they have a lot to cover.

Cheers, Stephen

I'm a software dork by day and I play music at night.

I was gonna buy a Mercedes wagon and run biodiesel in it. . . but then I parked one night behind a green 968, was smitten, and thought. . . hmmm. . . I wonder if an upright bass would fit in that thing?

Sure enough, it does!

I gotta take a picture of the headstock of my bass right next to the shifter

my first Pcar and I'll never sell her

You should get a nicely restored 356. A woman driving a nice 356 is, I think, about the most ridiculously hot car fantasy a Porsche guy could ever have. Serious class too.

Oh and my sincerest condolences about the Taurus. . .
