Need advice on how to sell this one...
#1

Greetings all! Although I have been a member for a few years, this is my first post.

I have a 1994 968 coupe that I purchased in 01 as a project car. The original intenet was to take how ever long and restore it as time/money permitted. Unfortunatly, I have not been able to do much over the years and have come to the conclusion that I should sell her. Here's where I need your help! I am looking for some advice on what I should ask for it. Here is a breakdown on what areas need TLC/repair:

* The tiptronic trans needs service. It lost all forward gears and now only shifts into reverse. (This was the

last thing thing to go down on the car. It has not been driven/registered since. This was in early 04)

* The sunroof needs replacement parts (Mostly the plastic gears and covers). The motor is fine.

* The passenger side headlight does not always raise properly. The lights have dimmed a few times

(almost like a strobe effect) on a few occasions.

* The brakes needs to be done.

* The rear wiper motor needs to be replaced.

* There is an oil leak towards the passenger compartment under the car.

The pros:

* The engine runs (Never had any issues with it.)

* Interior is in good shape. Typical wear to driver seat.

* Tires are in good shape.

* Body is straight except for a small ding in the drivers side fender. Could use a fresh coat and some

rubber along the bottom trim molds.

Repairs made:

* Front flex plate replaced at 62000 miles by Walters Porsche. (They also fixed a minor oil leak)

* Thermostat replaced (Walters Porsche)

* Maint performed at Walters Porsche.

This car has not been driven since 2004. It has been mostly garaged during that time. I have not taken any special steps during this time with regards to fluids or such. She currently has 79000 miles.

Bottom line is I was not able to treat this car with the attention she deserves and am hoping to find someone who can. I am looking to the 968 owners forum for help. Any suggestions you may have will be helpful! Sorry that my first post is about selling my baby! She needs alot of help...

James.

Well you have to start with market value of a car in only fair condition, then deduct the cost of the tranny repair. Any tip owners have experience with a major repair like that?

Also, you'll have to give someone a significant discount since they'll have to take your word for it and tow it away. Might be better to pay to have the tranny fixed and then sell.

As someone who has just gone through this purchase, if it were the car I wanted, I wouldn't pay anywhere near book understanding that there is so much risk in a car that can't be driven, and has not been driven in a couple of years.

In all likelyhood I would just pass. You'll do best with someone who sees the car as a cheap way in who can fix it themselves. THere are a couple of guys on this forum that I can think of who seem to like tearing these beasts apart <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Your best bet is to have a working transmission from a wrecked 968 installed before trying to sell this car. Try: Parts Heaven, Oklahoma Foreign and 20th Street Auto Parts to begin your search. If it cannot be driven you will have a very hard time getting rid of it. (these same salvage yards might be your only recourse). Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Tough one. If you have the cash I would second having the transmission repaired. The rest of those issues are maintenance and simple repairs. But the trans is huge. I suspect that you would both recoup the cost of repairs in the increased sale price and significantly increase the odds of selling the car.

At least get an estimate so that you can negotiate from some position.

Good luck and sorry that your Porsche dreams have not worked out.

I have the sunroof parts if you need them, but that does nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Unfortunately it is worth far more in parts than as a whole unless you fix the transmission.

In its current state, and seeing rough running driving 968's selling for less than $7k I would guess you would be lucky to get $4k for it. It would be a great project for someone to drop a 951 drive train into.

You could sell the engine for approx $3k alone.

I say Part it!

I would deffintly replace tranny w/a junkyard tip and then sell.

However if you dont have the time i would part it out or even try calling your local salvage yards and see what they will give. Like i have read the motor alone is worth 3k all day.

Thanks to ALL who have replied so far (and PM'd me)!!!

I am starting to lean towards parting out the car or selling her to a fellow owner. I am not sure I want to hang on to her long enough to replace the tranny. And if I did, I fear I would want to keep the car and start driving again. Not a bad thing by any means, but this is the same mentality I have carried for the past 4 years while she has been down.

Again, thanks to everyone who has responded thus far!!! I have always been impressed at how this community supports one another! Porsche owners are one of a kind!

I will keep you posted as to what happens from here....

Take care, James
