looking at a 951 need advice \ tips
#1

Howdy fellas and happy Friday,

Haven't posted on here since I sold my 968. Now that I've bought a house and am somewhat used to making the payments I've been looking at cars a bit. NOTHING out there compares to these cars... I guess I'm addicted to the Porsche experience...

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/381128369.html

Now on to the car I'm interested in which happens to be a slightly modded 951 in my area. Any particular questions or things I should be looking for on this car? If anyone has any knowledge of this car or have already looked at it have any pointers for me I'd greatly apreciate it.

I will also require this car to be my daily driver of about 40 miles round trip to work and back daily. I know my 968 performed flawlessly under these circumstances however will a slightly modded turbo stand up to the task???

I know this isn't a 968 and I looked at the "Other" area on the forum and it didn't seem to be the place for this post. If there is a more apropriate location please move it.

Thank you all in advance and hopefully I'll be running with the pack again soon in some form of a P-car...

While there is some 951 knowledge here I would think you would be better off at Rennlist or one of the more 944/951 oriented boards.

I have also posted on Rennlist 951 board but I like this forum and know there is a wealth of general knowlege of these cars.

I came across the same 951 posting on craigslist... gorgeous car, and seems to have a great maintenance list on it. It'll be nice to see the car go to someone on here if all works out

It looks like a nice car. The mods done to it are good ones, and it looks well taken care for.

Check on 951forums.com or Rennlist for more advice than you could ask for...the 951forums is more like this board, and it's run by a friend of mine Stephen Magown who has an 86 with lots of goodies on it too.

I prefer the 88S-89 cars, but that is just personal preference. I've had two 89 turbos and an 89 N/A racecar. If you'd like to take it offline, shoot me an e-mail.

With three 951's having lived in my garage, I would say that a well maintained '51 is not going to be substantially different from your 968...

And you don't have to worry that the Pinion Bearing is going to crap out on you costing $2 to $3K to fix! The usual suspects still apply... the hatch will eventually fail, the heater control will fail, the clutch will need replacing and IS a bigger deal than in our 968's... if driven hard, the head gasket will need replaced at some point... sounds like water pump and belts have been addressed... but it will always be something... just the nature of our beasts.

I am still amazed at how the price has crashed on the '51's... I sold my 86 albeit with less than 20% of the miles of the one you showed, for $18,500.00, with absolutely NO mods from stock. My other two went for in the middle teens... now I see them all over the place for less than $10K!!!

Guess it's time to buy one back and terrorize the streets again! Keep in mind that the Bilstein Escort Cups will be pretty hard on your backsides for everyday commuting... drive it a good distance first!
