I agree with everything Eric said. The longest I've ever run a set of the R6's is 90 minutes. They had fallen off pretty badly by that time, and I definitely wouldn't have been looking forward to running them another 6.5 hours. If you're saving enough money that you can change tires a couple of times, then they might give you an advantage over the competition.



Don't run the R6's on the street for anything other than a short trip to the track and back. They're very susceptible to puncture, and are dangerous if you encounter unexpected rain.

Hoosier only makes one DOT dry race tire, the R6. If you have a requirement to run a DOT tire like I do, then that's the one you'll run. They also have a fantastic DOT rain tire which you may want to consider if rain is likely. They also make a DOT autocross tire, the A6. Some guys run short sprint races on these, but I wouldn't even consider running an endurance race on these.



They also make full slicks, but I don't have any experience with those.



Also, for the past few years they've been making a spec tire for the Grand Am series in the US. It looks like a DOT tire, and is actually an evolution of one of their previous model DOT tires, but I don't believe it caries a DOT stamp. This tire has been discontinued since Grand Am moved to another tire supplier this year. Hoosier is probably dumping these tires now, so its possible that these are the ones that you're able to source cheaply. I've not run on these, but I have several friends who have. The tire is not as sticky or fast as the R6. However it is more consistent and lasts longer. Grand Am Koni Challenge runs races that are at least 2 hours in length, and the tires are supposed to be designed to go the distance without a change. Some teams may run an entire race on them, but a lot of teams change them about half way through the race since they have to do a long stop anyway for a driver change.

We have been told that the Hoos and other '2 liners' are banned in normal or R-spec classes and only able to be run against the other guys with Slicks and cages. They are not road legal over here and there is a grey area over their sale whatsoever as far as I can tell. We have some draconian laws here surprisingly.

I bet that those Hoos being offered are exactly what Jim is talking about. We have similar cheap Hoos on the market here.
