Porsche 968 in GT4
#1

For those of you who play racing games, especially Gran Turismo 4 for the PS2, you'll undoubtably notice that there aren't any Porsches in there. Other than a few RUF models. However, I've looked at a lot of other car makes and models trying to find something that is similar to the 968: weight, drive train, etc. What I found was a 1993 Nissan Silvia K's Aero (white!). With a semi-racing exhaust, a chip, and a custom gearbox with gear ratios as close to a 968 as I could get, it performs almost exactly like a stock 968 (at least according to the paper specs). 0-60 in roughly 6s, 400m in about 14.5s, top speed a bit higher.

Throw in a #3 turbo to bring the HP to around 300, and you get a 968 turbo a-like After playing around with it on the Suzuka circuit, I'm impressed at how much difference there is between 240 and 300 hp. It really pulls away in higher gears. Next I'll try adding some semi-racing suspension and lighter flywheel, see how much better it handles

Best lap times stock: 2:33s

Best lap time with turbo: 2:25s (2.23 is possibly with a good lap which I wasn't having, ugh)

Eventually I may get my hands on an Xbox and Forza Motorsports 2 which has a 1989 944 Turbo. Speaking of which, how DOES a 944 turbo compare to a 968 in real life? And why are two valves per cylinder better for turbo engines rather than 4 valves?

I have Forza for xbox and it's very realistic. It can be a rather complex game - the player should really have some insight on component dynamics and interaction. The only thing I dislike with Forza [as with PG2] is some of the courses have an unrealistic layout. One example is a 90° turn with a brickwall [or cement] along the side. In PG2 there are some nasty AI [or simulated] drivers - I've been spun out by the pitt maneuver when leading a long race, that wouldn't be allowed in the real world.

The 89 951 [944 turbo] is close to the 968 specs. The 951 is slightly faster in the straights, but the 968 makes up for it off-the-line and through the turns.

re 2 vs. 4 valve; a turbo doesn't need or benefit from a 4 valve arrangement which typically assists velocity. Forced air systems, [ie turbo] seem to respond better to one big hole as opposed to 2 small holes.

Just my .04

Yeah, the AI in GT4 is pretty oblivious to anything that goes on around them. You can stop in the middle of the track on a long straight (on anywhere), and they'll just plow right into you like you weren't there. No blue flags either, which is frustrating when you're trying to get around a back marker while chasing the 1st place guy Nor are there penalties for dirty racing heh.

I'm really happy they're FINALLY doing more than 6 cars per race in the next Gran Turismo. 6 cars per track, hmm, USGP 2005 anyone? lol it makes the races feel really empty.

GT4 was a fantastic game. I'd have to dig it out, but I think I had a few silvias/SX's

best magazine times for the 968 & 89 944 Turbo.

0-60

968: 5.9

951: 5.5

1/4

968: 14.2

951: 13.5

top speed

968: 158mph

951: 162mph

around track, a less experianced driver may put down better laps with the easier to drive 968, but a pro will hbut down better laps with an '88-89 944 Turbo S. the 86-88 Turbo isn't as good in the handling/braking dept as the Turbo S, and makes 30less HP. 0-60 & 1/4 times are much closer to 968 times.

the 8V heads are better for low end power(torque), while the 16V heads are better for high end power in regards to turbo applications.

there were 968's & 944's in Need for Speed (Porsche Unleashed).

Actually, there weren't any 968s in Porsche unleashed either (not in the PC version anyways) There were a lot of 944s (including an S2), as well as a 928 GTS which you could download, but no 968s. So far the only ones I have found were fan created cars for High Stakes I think it was. Never tried them out however.

Fox: perhaps try being a little more specific next time so the reader doesn't have to guess or assume. Your need 4 speed line lacks specifics...

951 vs 968; it goes w/o saying - with any car it depends who's behind the wheel...

Heh, I didn't mean to start an argument, I was just saying that I've never seen a 968 in PC version of NFSTongueU (the only one I have). I didn't realize the game was available for other platforms. Sure enough there was a PS1 version, and it has a few 968 models.

Picked up Forza a few days ago and have been playing around with it, I must say I'm impressed. After playing GT for so long, I didn't think there were games that could perform better (especially something out of the xbox camp, AND the first game of the series!), or give you a better driving model, but I think that the cars in forza feel more present, or raw. Like driving a FWD car gives you a lot of understeer if you're hard on the gas out of a corner. Where as RWD is a lot of oversteer. It's very easy to get the car to so what you want it to, and it really feels like you're driving on the edge at times. Granted all I've really raced right now are D-class and C-class cars Speaking of which, I REALLY like the grading system in Forza. At a quick glace you know if your car is more or less equal to another car.

I need to try GT4 without any driver aids and see how it feels.

And yeah, 944 turbo, woot! Finally a car similar to the 968 in a modern racing game

I just wish both games had better race simulation like GTR2, that game is just crazy. You can do a full race weekend in realtime if you want. Practice, qualifying, then race, pit strategies, car tweaks out the ying-yang, you name it! Up to like 30 cars on the track at once or something silly like that lol

I tried to get into Forza. . . I can't get with racing games though. Too twitchy, the car was impossible to keep in a straight line. The car should naturally unwind like a real wheel does.

I think I'd enjoy the game better if I had a racing setup with wheel instead of thumbpad.

I gotta figure this out though. . . I gotta memorize the Nurburgring!
