POLL: Like it or Hate it. PORSCHE windshield banner
#41

I'm all for dumping Nike, DC and all those millions of companies who emblazon my clothing and charge me extra to wear it! I want subsidized clothing or royalties from these people - not going to happen. These guys have so many peopled fooled as to what they are really up to and how much money they make off the backs (and feet) of the consumer.

Now, where is my Starbucks mug, I need a grande mocha, half calf, latte cappuccio with caramel and sprinkles - to go?

Way OT

you guys just wait until someone at a gas station, instead of asking you if that's a Ferrari, asks you if that's the new Miata or the latest Honda.. or worse.. a kit car and then you'll have every Porsche crest, decal, and winshield banner front and back all over the car

I can't even stand to have a license plate frame on any of my cars. And front license plates? Never!!

Off-off topic - had a 968 sighting on the freeway this morning. First in about six months!

yeah - i hate porsches - i almost didn't buy this car BECAUSE it was a porsche. i don't like their engineering precept, or pretty much anything about their cars, and i certainly don't like the owners as a group. PCA makes me crazy and the attitude that prevails amongst the owners is off-putting. the 968 owners, on the other hand, have turned out to be largely a very "normal" bunch of car enthusiasts.

the 968 is the ONLY porsche i would even consider, and it is very much outside the box. the fact that it is the red-headed step child of the family was the factor that swung me over.

speechless.

lol - it took porsche 40 years to finally get it right with the 968, and still it needed re-engineering. in my mind, no other porsche is worth the cost of the tow truck to haul it away. way too many other cars i'd rather have, and look a whole lot sexier. the bar of soap shape that is all other porsches just never caught my eye, the weight was always a detraction, and the over-engineering is just too much to deal with.

when i got the car, i had been looking for a 2 seat ragtop, with AC, power steering, manual trans, and could carry 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 cases of wine, a weekend of luggage and the wife. not a lot to choose from. when this car arrived, i said to myself "now there is a car i can tear apart and build up the way it should be." i'm pretty close now.

we all like the 968 for different reasons.

The front of the car is so clean without the plate , but forbidden by law to drive without one

I was in an Infiniti dealership yesterday. Drove up in the 968. Salesman comes up and says wow what a great looking 924. Tongue in cheek I asked him why he was insulting me. He stuttered and said I mmmean 944. I said with just the faintest hint of a smile on my face, did you learn this technique in car sales school? Poor bastard beet red says I'm sorry I mean 928. I said thre strikes and your out. Clearly lost I gave him a second , it was interesting to watch the lite go off in his face and him say with no hope of being correct, just a last wild guess thinking that not only have I insulted this guy but I've lost a sale, a 968? Not to be a prick, but it's fun watching people's reactions with our cars.

When I was a kid I wanted a 944 Turbo. This was because it went well, handled and was modern - everything a 911 wasn't. And at the time, the 911 ego brigade didn't like them as they are not "pure" porsches. A 944 Turbo performed better than pretty much everything apart from a 911 Turbo. They were practical as well - if you have seen the photo/ad with around 14 cases of beer in the back of a 944 - it does not get better than that.

So I spent 3 years looking for a 944 Turbo, gave up and found my 968 instead. Some things are meant to be.

I still love the car for what it can do when set-up and driven well. Nothing makes me smile more than being able to lap a twisty circuit in a 18 year old car quicker than a new 911 GT3 which has twice the power (well it did until I supercharged the car). Spend 1/10th of the price and get more than 100% of the performance. Got to love economics that way - bang for your buck - you bet.

It is not until recently that the true performance potential of the car really has started to come out as people have begun to modify them.

yup - that's what i saw when i was first looking at the car 8 years ago. i saw what was lying underneath waiting to be brought to the surface.

it's getting fun now

Adam yours didn't count!

vliegwielolaf1234 - It's technically against the law to drive without a front plate here in CA too, but you generally won't get pulled over for it, or even get a ticket for it, unless the cop can't get you for something else, like tinted windows. There is an exception though - I got stopped and ticketed at LAX. Seems the TSA photographs every car coming in there, and they want to be able to track you if anything 'unusual' happens while you're there.

Ironic footnote to the above story - I forgot all about the ticket and had to go to court in Santa Monica to pay up. While I was in there my car got a ticket for no front license plate!

Flash - I'm going to use my tax refund to get the alignment and clutch done. The fun starts soon!

actually, here in california it's only illegal to drive without a front plate if your car was issued 2 plates. also, the plate does not need to be mounted on the front of the car. it only has to be visible from the front, not higher than 54 inches, and affixed so that it does not "swing" (whatever that means).

they will ticket you in santa monica.

it's only a fix-it ticket though and something silly like $35. i'll pay it if and when it happens again.

I have been driving with replica german front plates since 1977, on all of the Porsches, and even on a few of the MBZs we had. I was stopped only once during this entire time, given a "fix it" ticket,

I put the regular Ca front plate on to drive to the local police station where I had the violation "corrected", and changed back to the german plate , still while IN THIER PARKING LOT, before I left..

Is a fix it ticket like my analogy of a broken window ticket? Make a call and make if go poof?

Back to stickers and emblems.. I was driving behind a Ford Fusion this evening, and on the rear of the car, the chrome emblem on the left says Fusion and the right one says Hybrid. And I thought.. If you really want to f**k with people's heads, just go to a Ford dealer, buy the " Hybrid " emblem and stick it on the back of the 968 . then wait for the puzzled looks and comments at gas stations !!

In my humble opinion, less is more. Any thing in the form of badges, decals, stripes etc, breaks up the flowing lines of a car's design. The 968 has a very unique design and turns heads. Keep it minimalist and keep em guessing.

You tell 'em Dan. I also drive naked up front. The car looks way better clean in the front - to hell with the rules. Friggin' facists.

Oh, and the black coupe with the red letters looks great in person as well. I like the wheels and red stripes too. That sort of look can be trendy, but I like to look at it. Like many designs, I love to see other people's interpretation , but always drive a much more conservative looking car myself.
