Pinion Bearing
#1

I hate to post a new thread on this topic, but I've read through at least a dozen threads and can't find mention of the question below.

Does the whine stop, get quieter, or get louder when the clutch is engagaed? I haven't driven it for 2 or 3 weeks and decided to take it to work this am. Whining noise appears around 3k RPM, but I wouldn't describe it as a jet engine sound, especially when decelerating. It seemed worse on the way home. The car has 81k and never a peep until today.

The noise should be louder under load - clutch engaged trans in gear. It should also be present at all RPM and vary with road speed, not engine speed, but louder at higher road speeds and more noticeable on deceleration.

There are also other things that can cause a whine, a bad wheel bearing for one.

You give me hope. I thought there should be noise on deceleration. When I let off the whine gets quieter or goes away. I don't hear it at low speeds, but I have some pretty loud 18" Toyo T1S'. I don;t think it's a wheel bearing though. Today was the first time I have driven the car below 50 degrees and I'm not sure when the gear oil was last changed. This has been a bad year for the 968 though. I've shelled out about 4k in mtc and repairs including zimmerman rotors.

if the whine does not sound like a jet engine ( and it would be audible whether in gear, or in neutral / coasting, or decelerating...where it does indeed sound

as if you've landed that plane and the engines' power reduces gradually to match the speed of the jet..uh, I meant the car .. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ) I'm also thinking it could be

a bearing, tire wear howl, or another culprit..

I'm certain it's not tires. It could be a wheel bearing I suppose, but rolling windows down one at time doesn't really change the sound. It seems to be coming from just behind the seats, a bit more noticeable from pasenger seat. As soon as it warms up I'll get it on jack stands and and try to figure it out before taking to mechanic. I've got a good one, but he's not cheap.

Another consideration is the Diff bearings, thay can sound similar to a worn wheel bearing. Is the noise more or less obvious when the car is worm or cold? I've had a similar problem which looks to be a wheel bearing but a specialist suggested to me that if when cold the noise was quieter it may be a diff bearing as the gear box oil was thicker, thinning as it warmed thus the noise getting louder.

Good Luck

I would say worse when it's cold. Thanks

Oh, oh... that's the spot where my pinion sound was most noticeable. But again,

it's a very distinct low key jet engine whine... and it's definitely pronounced on deceleration, which I understand yours does not occur that way

- so then maybe it is the diff or carrier bearings ? Hopefully you'll pinpoint it when you have the car up.

In terms of mechanic expense though, the diagnosis should not take but a few minutes I would imagine; a stethoscope to the differential should detect if that's where the problem stems from..
