Outside temp gauge reading out of control
#1

When I start the car, cold or warm, the outside temp gauge starts scrolling up to the top of the temp scale and then back down and then back up ... repeat... etc...

What the heck?!!!

Then when I rotate the main light switch to turn on the park or main lights, the display goes blank. If I turn the lights back off, the display comes back on (scrolling temps again).

Any ideas as to what it might be???

Beats me. I have a similar problem. The readout goes black when the lights are on and resets the readout to degrees celsius regardless of what you had it set for when you turn the lights on. Weird, no?

Mine has also started to behave strangely...and, according to Sunset, the units are NLA. Flash, where are you? There's a product need for you to fill.

Yes, problems with these gauges appears to be rampant. Mine doesn't display random readings like many of you describe; it just reads only in degrees celcius. Pretty accurately, as far as I can tell. This one appears to be incurable, from all indications. Maybe somebody could come up with some other useful gauge to put in its spot, though that seems like it would be an awful lot of work for minimal gain.

lol - i'm trying to figure out what to do with that space - i have had thoughts of removing it altogether

i never understood why one would want a temp gauge anyway - are we too dumb to know if it's shot or cold outside? does it matter? do we feel we need to pull over and put on a sweater when it hits 64?

i have one in all 3 cars, and while it provides the occasional and momentary entertaining "wow - look at the temperature", i never have been able to understand its point

I wonder if VW or Audi have a comparable or like item in their inventories. We all know there are several other parts that are interchangeable with them, perhaps this might be one of them.

Does anybody know who manufactured the digital outside temp gauge for Porsche? Maybe Bosch or VDO or ??? I reckon that might be a good place to start looking for same or similar replacements.

Who knows, maybe even Bugatti or one of the others under the VW umbrella make a similar unit. I'm sure any gauge from a Bugatti mounted into our cars ought to be good for a couple of HP right!

it seems to me somebody just had one out of their car - maybe they noticed who made it

i agree with the concept of "if it's there it has to work" - however, due to the sensor placement, it never reads quite right anyway, and is always reading the reflected temperature of the tarmac, and not the air temperature

isn't there a better thing we could stick there? i'd even prefer the 944 clock

i saw an Air/Fuel gauge once that fits right in there - not sure what they did with the buttons though - can't remember

Surprisingly, this is one of the most accurate temp gauges I've had on a car. My other cars in the past with temp gauges have always read much higher, this one is much more accurate. I'm comparing to my current A4, past LR Discovery and MB 300E.

i used a laser thermometer a few weeks ago when i could not believe the gauge, which read what i felt to be a good 10 degrees hotter than it actually was - i compared the air temp from another gauge to the gauge i the denali, to the gauge in the M3 to the readings i got from the laser

the laser pointed at the ground and the temp gauge were closest - the other 3 temp gauges were within 2-3 degrees of each other, and about 10 degrees lower

granted it was a hot day(about 90) and the ground was hot, but nonetheless it showed me that the gauge was useless

this is the behavior i have noted on this gauge every time i am stuck in traffic too - the reading soars to well over 100, but i know it's only about 85 outside

it never really gets cold enough for me to check that end of the spectrum (or at least i don't drive the car when it is)

I definitely feel it's more accurate at recognizing temps south of 70 degrees F. It does read high on hot days, but not to the level my A4 does. That car will read 110 when it's really 90-92 degrees where the 968 will register 97 or so.

Mine started having issues a month or two ago. It simply shows random individual bars that make up the numbers. I had it out of the car and had our electrical engineer look at it. He thought maybe one of the resistors was bad. He had a few of the same resistors but didn't swap them out yet because he found a tracer that needed some help as well. I believe VDO makes the gauge. I tried all kinds of searches on the web to see if I could come up with anything but there is nothing I came across that helped. The biggest problem is that it drives me crazy! I can't stand to have something not work on a car... ugh! I'll see what our EE can do about it and if it works. Maybe he can do some side work for us?!

You guys in CA just don't get it Up here where the sun don't always shine I like knowing the temp outside while driving. Not to change my clothing but if I see 0C approaching it's an indicator of possible road frost/ice. Some of our club drive get some elevation to them and it's usually been dewy in the am.

lol - yeah - i can see that, though i would not be driving the 968 in such weather no matter where i lived, so again, for me, a useless tool - in a situation like that i would hop in the denali for the 4WD

i had the typical happen today (yes, i actually was out driving the car) - i had a morning meeting and when i came outside just before noon, it was 82 degrees outside, but the temp gauge in the car read 119 (not a typo) - once i got rolling, it dropped down to nearly "normal", though it still was a good 5 degrees higher than both of the bank thermometers i passed

What do you suppose causes the wildly differing temp readings? Maybe a resistance issue? I've never looked under there to see how (or where exactly) it's mounted but could the probe on the end of the wire become damaged/cracked from road debris or insects? Or is it possible to damage the housing if the batwing or bumper cover were R&R'd?

the sensor is under the right side mirror - it picks up the temp from road reflection, so when the tarmac is really hot, like so often here in southern california, it doesn't read right

we can melt your shoes here if you stand still too long - no joke

Maybe if you disassembled the laser thermometer, mounted the display in place of the 968 display, and had the laser to continuous on, them you would never have to worry about the stock one.

That thermometer is the one thing I don't like about the interior of my car It's also stuck in celsius. I try to ignore it but it will not go away

Let's have a show of hands: Anybody out there have an outside temperature display that actually works? By "works", I mean it displays by default in degrees farenheit, the reading is reasonable accurate, it's stable, and you can switch to degrees celcius and back.

lol - everything but the accurate part, and then it's really only limited to times when it's bloody hot outside, particularly if the car is sitting
