Out for a Drive
#1

Discovered a new friend at work. Another Porschophile. So we agreed to share our experiences over lunch. In his car this time, mine next.

Absolutely georgeous 89 Carerra. Black coupe, 55k miles, linen interior which was flawless. Engine bay was very clean and he had not detailed it. Its a driver, not a concours, but a really nice driver.

Anyway, I drove it back from lunch. I've driven an old 911 once before so I did not really remember what to expect. You can almost feel Ferdinand Porsche's soul through that car. Very heavy clutch. Very heavy brakes. Very heavy non-assisted steering. Every pebble in the tarmac came through to my hands. The flat 6 wailed away in the back like a VW on steriods. A unique and entertaining experience.

God I love my 968.

Nice to keep in touch with Porsche from "the other side" of the marque. Good for you for having such a terrific friend!!!

Friends are good.

lol - yeah - every time i get in one of those overblown bugs i come back to the 968 and am thankful - i know it's blasphemy to porschephiles, but i absolutely hate the 911, especially the earlier ones - not one thing about it attracts me to it (unless it's on fire, which happens a lot)

and this is coming from somebody who drove rattly, leaky, sparky british cars for 25 years

as much as i'd still like another 2000lb sportscar, i prefer the 968

I don't see how you can hate a 911. I had a early one a long time ago (1966 model) and it was very entertaining. I can see hating a Malibu or Buick or some econo-box, but not the 911.

lol - pretty easy for me, but i get that some won't understand it - no worries - i won't even try to swing anybody - but, a brief list would be:

the sound bugs me - sounds to me like a hoover with a broken beater bearing
the handling is too nervous
the car is too heavy (remember, anything over 2000lbs is too heavy to me)
the seating position, steering wheel, and shifter location suck for me
it looks too much like a VW bug (makes sense though since that is its roots)
rattly noisy car (not all that different though in that regard than what i used to drive)
the tops don't fit right (remember, i don't like ANY hardtop car - gotta be a ragtop)
i don't like the pushing sensation when power is applied in a corner - reminds me too much of a front wheel drive car

i've driven most all of the models over the years, and while some are better than others, i don't like any of them one bit

but that's ok - nobody is forcing me to drive one, and it makes me like the 968 all that much more

I can see why you don't like the 911...well sorta. I had a Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet and the body flex was terrible, it leaked and the top was never right.I sold it within 6 months. But my 964 Carrera 4 Coupe had extremely good handling and is still my favorite car of all. IMHO there is no sound on earth, other than a V12 Aston Martin DB9, that sounds as good.

Different strokes for different folks. For instance, I drove a friend's MGB GT (Stock) a couple of years ago and I absolutely hated it. I was thinking of buying a barn find and restoring it, but after the drive i passed on the opportunity. So I can't undertand how you could lke them so much. But that is what makes life interresting

Isn't it great ( and interesting) that we all like different things! Great to have friends that will let you try out their cars as well

( I love my 968 - but I would love a 964 sitting along side it in my garage!!)

I think everyone is correct in that there really is no comparison between the 968 and the 911. They are soooooo different. What most people dislike about the early 911 is exactly what most fans like about them. Heavy clutch, heavy brakes, goofy shifter lever, rattles and bumps...and you're the one in control of all of this! That's precisely why it's fun...and why my wife doesn't understand what the appeal is.

As much as I love my '82 SC, I can honestly say that I don't prefer it as a daily driver and that's not how mine gets used. The later model 911 (964 and on) are much more refined but still retain enough of the feel from the early cars. The 968 is completely refined and the near perfect front/rear balance and handling makes it very easy to drive and very easy to drive fast. That's how I usually end up explaining it to people when they ask about how it drives. I'm baby sitting a '91 964 Cabriolet for a guy until April and it was interesting to do some side by side comparing to my '82 to see how it evolved over a roughly 10 year period.

im a fan of the older 911's. A very unique driving experiance unlike any other car out there. The sounds they make are very nice as well. That being said, i would not trade my 968 for one unles it were a Turbo or a 993.

I drove an '04 GT3RS and it was a complete blast and this was before it was turboed. Certainly is a different "beast" to drive than than the 968. Had to get used to the rear stepping out when I got on the power. I also had an early 911 (a 67 911E) but it was so long ago I have forgotten the driving experience. Also I had a 951 with adjustable boost added and that was a great car to drive. Now I can't wait for the turbo kit on my car.

OT - but an interesting little note from a drive Saturday. Was moving along very briskly on one of my favorite local roads - lots of high speed sweepers. Anyway, coming around a particular blind bend you want to be prudent and slow her down a bit. In 6th - changed to 5th - oops, I mean 3rd. Engine screemed to 6500 and the tail started to step out. No tire squeal at all, just a gentle loss of traction to about 5 degrees off axis. Exciting. Put the clutch back in, put it in 5th where it was supposed to be, and away we went. Wife said - what was that? I said "oh, nothing dear, I just missed a shift". Hmmm......

My kingdom for LSD?
