New Stereo - Continental CDD7418
#21

lol - and i wouldn't want that car either.  no way no how.  i wouldn't even want to take it out for a test drive.  absolutely no interest.  i am all about function over form.  it has to do what i want, before i even consider it.  this applies to everything i think about buying.  i am not interested in looks, style, or any other measurement of interest.  i am all about specs, performance, and ease of operation, be it a stereo, a car, or a toaster.

some people though are all about looks, bling, or status.  they buy expensive watches, when a timex tells time just the same.  they buy designer clothes to wear around the house, when a pair of target sweats are just as comfortable.  i don't get any of that.  i like nice things as much as the next guy, but i won't have anything that is outperformed by something else, if i can afford the better performance.  i also see no value in originality.  i am not a collector.  i have things to use them.  i throw them away when they are done.

but that's me.  it's fine with me for somebody else to like older stuff that doesn't do as well as newer stuff.  that gives me somebody to sell my old and tired junk to.  "one man's trash" and all that

Which is just one of the 38,114,999 other reasons I'd never by this car. Lol

So, I follow the same route that flash does...I modify my cars and drive them, but I often try to make modifications reversible when reasonable to do so.

I also think a really good update is to add navigation and backup cameras to old cars.

Here's a photo of the 968 with a Blaupunkt double DIN.  It even plays movies (which no one really needs, right?), but I like that it has a volume knob - - pretty much listen to the same radio station all the time & just turn the volume up and down, so "navigating" the screens isn't a big deal to me...and adding steering wheel controls doesn't pass the cost (including time)/benefit analysis for me.

lol - overstating the obvious, aren't we?  come on - you guys can do better than that

but now we are way off track.

i am in the middle of a stereo install project right now.  the car didn't come with much.  i have to have nav, an EQ, and a good phone interface.  so, i am replacing half of the dashboard, so as to fit a double DIN unit.  i have to relocate a bunch of switches, change facia components, and a bunch of wiring.  i have parts flying in from all over the globe to do this.  but, that's what it takes to make the car right.  unless you stay in your own neighborhood, you need nav.  unless you are retired, you need a good phone interface.  unless you only listen to talk radio, you need an EQ.  having all of this makes the driving experience so much better.  i can't imagine deliberately going another direction.

but, like i said, some people just don't care, or have other priorities.  i never understood wash and shine concours events either.  it's all about the preparation and setup of the car for me, and not about what it looks like.  but some guys are out there with their q-tips and such, shining up their cars, as if they had anything to do with what made the car what it is.  it's like complimenting a girl on her looks, as if she had a hand in the genetics that made them.  the clothes she chose to wear, yes.  her looks no.  to me, prepping a car for concours is like being a fluffer.

someday, somebody is going to have to explain the merits of these decisions to me.  clearly i'm just not getting it.

whatever - not my problem.  not my car.  peace out.

Flash, you don't believe in complimenting a woman on her looks? I'll bet I had a lot more fun in college than you did!

Fluffier? New Irish term? Bill is right it's like another beachball. While I don't do concours or use q tips I do like a well prepped car inside and out. Over here in America people do judge you by your looks and first impressions. Sort of like polished shoes. I do agree about good tunes and the other items you mention.

lol - rap - look it up.

bill - no, i don't compliment a woman on her looks.  i compliment her on what she is wearing, how she carries herself, or something for which she is responsible, but not on her genetics.  that's why i don't understand wash and shine concours competitions.  all it shows is somebody's ability to wash a car.  big deal.  show me how well you set the car up for its intended purpose.  show me your mods.  that says something about your abilities.  show the car, sure.  no problem there.  but it's no real competition to see who can wash the car the best.  i pay people to do that.  should i be able to get a trophy for somebody else's work?

A concours is a little bit more than washing a car.
