Obvious to all but me

Ok,
On the driver side, in the trunk, between the carpet liner and the wheel fender there is a motor which rotates a cam wich moves a cable that goes to the rear lock. When I turn the trunk key counterclockwise it activates. The cable bucks up and down as if it is not functioning properly. I looked in the owners manual, on this forum and the only reference is in the dC Automotive schematics

and all it's called is "electric motor".
What is it's purpose?

That seemed to be the obvious answer, I guess it just seemed an extraordinarily over-engineered way to open the trunck latch. I understand the designers had to tie in the electric release button down by the drivers left foot, however to run from the lock around the trunk to a motor mechanism which attaches to a cable which runs back down the same path around the trunk to the latch. wow! I always thought efficiency was a primary German trait!
Thanks again Flash.
If they ever decide to rename this forum they might want to incorporate "Flash" somewhere in the name.

I totally agree that it it an absurdly overcomplicated way to pop a trunk lid.

I had to replace a diode in the motor assembly last year.
