Retrofit Tiptronic from Manual transmission
#1

Ok- here's one I haven't seen on the boards so here I go. I am looking to remove my 43K mile 6 speed transmission and retrofit (replace) with a Tiptronic. After everyone quits laughing, I am looking at his since I am getting a bit older, am not going to get rid of my sweetheart but the hip is starting to hurt at times. The clutch is new (2K ago). This is my daily driver.

Has anyone done this retrofit? Ok...go back to laughing now.

Ha I think a hip replacement would be easier.

I think you are right that you have never read about this conversion because I'll bet no one has done it. The tiptronic is a highly computerized transmission. Dedicated wiring harness, drivetrain, controller and sensors, incuding accelerometers and quite possibly a "flux capacitor" for good measure.

If one were to pull this off, you would no doubtly need an entire donor car that was originally equipped with a tip. You could then pull apart the car and grab the necessary parts. This also begs the question - would it be easier to transplant the good pieces from your car into the tip donor and leave the drivetrain and wiring harness alone?

In the end I thing you will find that it would be better to just sell what you have a buy a tip car.

I think that it might be easier to sell your 6 spd. and buy a tip.

Although these cars are in limited supply, your 6 spd would be more sought after than a comparable tip. You might even come out ahead!

I would guess that the tranny swap would cost more than the car swap. Make sure to lube the clutch lever and spring, the clutch release lever and secondary spring located under dash @ driver's side and check to make sure that the hyd. fluid was changed in the clutch cylinder. These will make the clutch easier to press in.

Good Luck!

yeah - i think you should sell the 6 speed, buy a tip, and then do something fun with the extra money

Two years + ago when we bought, the TIPs were selling for more than the 6 speeds and the Blue Book values were higher as well. At that time the pinion bearing issue was depressing prices of the 6 speeds. On eBay the 6 speeds have been more popular than the TIPs, eBay does skew prices, but the best prices for the TIPs have been there. Due to job changes, our 968 Cab is now my commute car and the automatic is definitely an advantage, leaves more time for defensive driving with all the idiots in SUVs here in San Diego. I know it's not their fault that some of them aren't tall enough to see the cars in the next lane, but still it'd be safer if they drove something else. If I can't see the driver in the driver's seat, I assume that they can't see me.

Anybody jack up a 968 to SUV heigth? Probably a SOCAL thing, I wouldn't be surprised if someone has done it out here.

Thanks guys - I have been researching all the required changes that would need to take place and a donor would certainly be great (to be present) as first suggested. Think I found one up north but have no price yet. The only drawback is it's a Cab and the worst part for me is having to gut 'er out to get the harnesses. That takes me back to looking for a Coupe main wire harness to make the change. I am very experienced as a mechanic and have no issue with the swap (I like to do stuff like this anyway) and have always liked a challenge although a Flux Capaciter is ceratinly a bit more than I can do. However, reality says I probably should look for a complete car rather than the retrofit.

As a side note, how much more noise is there to a Cab (top up) from a Coupe?

at least 10db at 80mph, depending on tires and other such things - it's not bad, and you can certainly carry on a conversation, but it is not nearly as quiet

Please, please just buy the car you want. The idea of ripping up two cars and possibly scrapping one to accomplish this goal really bothers me.

Huh? Scrap a 968? Never! I couldn't bring myself to such a dasterdly deed. I was talking about buying one that was totaled and using it as a donor. I like the car too much to think about scraping one.

968Z - Your offer has raised an eyebrow. I have 42K on a '94 model with a new clutch, brakes, belts and no mechnical problems. What do you have in mind? Send me a PM if your serious.

I wish you luck, plus maybe I could help defray the cost by purchasing your 6 speed when you're done. I notice you are in Ga. I'm on the other side of town, but could give you a hand on weekends when you get to the heavy work.

Thanks...I think I'll have to go into the holding pattern until a totaled out donor coupe pops up on the radar. I am not finding one at any reasonable cost right now so it looks like I'll just have to sit and wait. When I do find the right vehicle, you can bet I'll post the progress and give you a call. :-) Thanks for the interest and perhaps we can get together sometime.
