Noise from Engine at 3100 RPM
#1

The noise almost sounds like when as a kid you'd take a straw and cut the end into a "V" and blow through it... but a metallic-ish version. A resonant vibration... Comes from the passenger side. Not necessarily directly from the engine, but if not then it's below it... I haven't lifted the car. Anyone have similar experience? Thanks for any input.

Check your heat shields.

Seems this is the 3rd or 4th such post recently.

I had a metal high pitched rattle, turned out to be a loose internal exhaust baffle....but i have an aftermarket exhaust

Or, you could go through what I did a couple of months ago. I was hearing a sort of metallic, almost screeching sound, coming from the left rear. It sounded somewhat like a loose exhaust bracket, except the noise was connected to the application of the brakes. I carefully limped home, jacked up the car, and found the exhaust to be attached as solidly as a brake caliper to its hub... wait, bad analogy, because, as I was poking around, I put my hand on the left rear caliper, and it almost fell off in my hand! One of the bolts holding it to the hub was missing, and the other was hanging on by just a couple of threads. Apparently, when whoever put the caliper back on last, he forgot to torque the bolts. The other rear's bolts were also just finger tight as well, though the fronts were fine.

Same exact problem. Mine cause was the heat shield over the passenger engine mount bending toward the front of the car and rubbing into the heat shield above it.

Yeah, I saw your post, but the description of the location of the noise didn't seem to fit. I hope its just that, a loose bolt or something. I did drive today at about 10MPH with the windows down (friggin' cold at 6am!), and found there is a general faint rattle, and then the isolated resonance comes in at 3100rpm... but doesn't grind or elsewise sound like an expensive fix.

thanks everyone for your input!

Very Well. My A/C is on the blink, but the heat works great. (Much unlike my old 944. R.I.P)

ok - not the vacuum line at the heater control valve - take a look at the others though, both at the firewall, and over near the fuel pressure regulator

Yeah, this problem was fixed as well.... not as simple as the tire rub, but nice to have it gone. One of the bolts on the A/C Compressor was sheered off. YIKES!!! They tried to re-attach somehow (!) and it failed within a few miles, so I got a refurb and the noise is gone.

UGH. Now on to the other problems.
