Noise from below
#1

On my way back from driving(968) from St.Louis to Chicago this weekend I made the mistake of complimenting my car to my wife by saying what a great, reliable, problem free unit it had been and I might as well have yelled "nohitter" in the ninth inning.I get up Monday(was going to drive it to work) and as I am driving down our street I here this "whirring" noise coming from passenger side rear(I think) and as I increase speed it does as well.Needless to say,I turned around went home(taking it to shop tomorrow). It kind of sounded like when a tire is going bad(new tires-less than 2 mos.).I guess it could be wheel bearing,CV,ect.I guess I am due for something on it.I've had it for 5 yrs?(it is 92 coupe with 87,000).Haven't driven it that much(maybe once a week?).Anyway, regardless of whatever this turns out to be,it is a awesom car that I never get bored driving.I had it(90+mph) most of way back and never felt like it was breaking a sweat.Been driving LandRover Discovery(off road package) to work this week, what a contrast in vehicles!

see if it does it with the gearbox in neutral, and/or if it changes with selection of gear

Shop just called and said it was right rear wheel bearing(I guess it could have been worse).Should be fixed today.

If the noise changes with road speed, independent of what gear you are in, you may be experiencing the first stage of a pinion bearing failure in the tranny. Though I have never, personally, experienced this common failure in many 968's, the posts indicate that the noise is a whirling noise likened to that of a jet engine.

If it is not high pitched as described above, it could be tires or a carrier bearing in the rear, which is not as big a deal to fix as replacing the pinion bearings.

If you don't have a good independent mechanic familiar with the 944/968, and you live in Chicago, I would suggest that you give Jim Becker a call at his business of the same name (Becker Service Center) located in Naperville. Jim used to race 944's and is very familiar with the car.

I would advise against taking the car to a local dealer in Chicago since most of them do not even remember was a 968 is, let alone be able to diagnose the problem.

Or give me a call at 630-615-0345 since I do live in Naperville. I currently have a 93 coupe but also owned a 93 cab. And, I agree....they are great cars. I'd be glad to listen to the issue.
