Noise After Startup
#1

My morning routine...I fire up the car, back it out of the garage, then put it in 1 and drive away. Right about the time I put it in first I hear a noise from the passenger side of the car that sounds like a power mirror that has tilted down during reverse is now tilting back to normal. Now this car does not have mirrors like that (at least not that I have noticed), so I am just curious if anyone knows what this sound is. On our other car, I hear a little noise like this right when I open the door, and I am told that is the fuel pump preparing for startup. The noise here though is after I start up and goes for just a bit longer. Honestly, it is probably just a little more than a second.

Does anyone know about this, or am I crazy? Not mutually exclusive I suppose, but in this case I will act like they are.

Thanks.

you're not crazy - many of us have heard it - it's been so long now that i have forgotten about it - i believe the theory is that it's the same fuel pump thing, and not to be worried about

After startup sometimes there is a noise from the ABS system as well which comes from the right front fender rear of the tire.

Yeah, the ABS initializing sounds just like the power mirrors. Good way of describing the sound.

Agree that the sound right after start up is the ABS initializing, nothing to worry about. Good luck, bob blackwell.

I figured it was something simple like that, and more just curious than anything else. Thanks for everyone's feedback.

ditto. I actually have the same routine.

I back down a slight hill exiting my garage, so Im on the brakes. But I cant recall if I hear the noise before or after I engage 1st gear and I dont have the car here now to test it.

IIRC, the "noise" occurs when you start moving forward. I always hear it after I put the car into first gear and begin my journey. Backing out of the garage or parking space doesn't seem to trigger it...must be designed that way.

Darryl, I think you are right. I paid extra attention this morning and I heard it right after I put it in 1st and started going.

Now that I know it is nothing to worry about though I will just crank the radio and enjoy...just need to get those new speakers installed.

I think someone said it triggers at 4 MPH, so right as you start off ...

4mph seems right, i'm about half way down my driveway when it kicks in.

it's ABS. . . my understanding is it's a pump for modulating the brakes

anyhow it also will come on under heavy ABS-oriented braking eg hard braking over bumpy surfaces. I get it sometimes when I'm doing the PCH at speed and brake hard before a turn.
