NEW SPONSOR - Higher Connections
#1

968 Forums would like to welcome a new sponsor. Their name is Higher Connections. They have picked up the ball on the "Ice Shark" cable sets and have continued running with it, adding to it and further developing it along the way. To contact them, just click their sponsor button on the Home page or on the Index page.

here is a quick bio they wrote:

[color="#000080"]In 2002, Dan Wray (IceShark), a long-time Rennlist member, started making headlight kits/harnesses, for 944's. The results were amazing. Dan built a battery cable kit, with beefier Negative cables and a supplemental ground as well, to help cure the obviously poorly grounded engine. For added safety, he fused two of the Positive cables.

Proof of the ongoing design problem was illustrated in the summer of 2004, when there was a rash of 944 engine fires. Several were attributed to worn out battery cables. The cables should be checked periodically, as we have found bad cracks in about every main cable we've seen to date.

Unfortunately, Dan passed away in September of 2005. He had just started another run of battery & headlight cables, and his family sold the remaining inventory to me. Over the last two years, I've been building the battery cables, and have continued to use the exact same components that Dan used. My partner Charly started working with me about a year ago. Together, we've recently finished building more of the headlight harnesses.

So, for 968's, we are building more battery cables and are loooking into making several other things, but it will take some time to test, etc. For now, we are focusing more on battery cables, and can do about any custom length and/or gauge cable, that someone might need. Headlight cables are in the works, but not ready yet. Look for news on that soon.

Parts list for complete battery cable kit, will be sold for $310 shipped to anywhere in cont US. This was $350 if using Paypal, to buy from Dan Wray 3yrs ago, and he did not include one or two little things, that we are including. We will sell anything seperately that anyone wants too.

Thanks a lot!

I have a set made by them and they are the schnitz! I have no idea if that is a real word or not.

These cables ended the long troubleshooting of temp guage and other electrical issues I had. I highky recommend them.

My battery was drained yesterday after the car sat for a week. I went to give it a jump and on close examination, my cables look pretty worn. Didn't know about the fire hazard but that adds to my motivation. Seeing as how mark "Highky recomends them" , I'll be clicking the link.

Oh yeah, Welcome and thanx 4 being a part of the forum

Welcome and thank you for taking on this product. I don't know anyone who installed these cable who didn't see an incredible improvement. I can't wait to install the set in my car.

Regards,

Jay

agreed - there is a LOT of room for improvement in the OEM wiring - the main circuits seem to be carryovers from previous harnesses, and frequently show losses, especially when aged

this could not have come along at a better time

I have a set installed on my car and couldn't be happier. My old cables were cracked beyond belief when I pulled them out. The outer jacket on the main positive cable from the half way down the block to the starter completely disintegrated when when I started pulling it out. My starter to alternator cable was in the same shape on the back side of the alternator and starter side. All of these are attributed to age and heat. Fortunately they are using ExFlex outer sleeves on all the cables in this set which are rated for heats higher then the 968 driving thru a desert in August could put out, so I expect a long life out of these.

The cables are also super easy to change, it takes minimal skills to get it done. Higher Connections is also great to deal with for support if you happen to need it.

A quick reminder of what my old positive starter to alternator cable look liked when I went to replace them.. A 94 with 80k miles

Yes, the alternator wire is included. It has a three positives in the kit, battery to starter, starter to alternator, and a supplemental feed to the fuse box. For the ground cables, in addition to the normal ground it also has a supplemental ground added in as well.

One would think those wires were abused or came off a car that was in a bad accident.

Glad to hear the installation is on a novice level.

The end with some insulation left is the electrical tape I put on when I noticed it crumbling off. After I started touching the rest of the cable while removing it the rest of it crumbled off.

Wow, I never even saw this thread until banditsc linked a pic from another thread earlier today. Sorry for missing your question XRad, even though bandit already took care of it for me. And, thanks again bandit, for all of your help on this stuff! Also, thanks for the welcome rhudeboye!

Last, prices sometimes fluctuate on some of the materials for the kit, so right now, we've got them (the complete ekits) for $280 shipped, down from $310. I think Dan was paying some pretty steep prices for copper, a few years ago, when he was selling for a lot more...

Yes, and the endorsements on this thread started in 2008...I do not want to see a bunch of 968s catch fire..then again, that might make my car worth millions...never mind, don't change your cables, leave them just as they are...

Monday grumpy...
