New Poll!!!

It snowed six or so inches today, and since I have a steep up hill to the road, I had a tough time. What about you guys, do you drive it in the snow?

snow is something i only want to see through glass, and even then, it had better have an on/off/ switch

i don't even take the car in the rain (ok, it's seen rain 4 times in its life)

I dunno how to vote LOL. I drive in the snow, but doing so usually scares the #$%* out of me.

No need to drive either convertible rwd with summer tires in the snow when there are two 4x4's at the house. Plus my driveway is up hill and I really don't want to deal with that.

We received about 3 to 4 inches yesterday and it worked great. Not the same as my Jeep Grand Cherokee that I used to have but it will work with a few driving adjustments. I actually was able to make it up the hill leaving my office once the lady in the Ford Ranger gave up and got out of the way. Running 16 inch Conti Extremes.

About 4 inches of snow this morning. Where it had been turned to heavy slush I had some sliding around, but overall no problems - and, what a blessing, it doesn't come into the cowl and leak into the car like rain water does. C'mon, snow!

I LOVE snow. We had some snowfall recently and I took my 968 out and about, didn't have to many problems. Just have to be careful

My lady and I are looking to add an Audi A4 Quattro to the stable though. The convertibles aren't that efficient for going up to the slopes....

Snow is fun for the dog but unfortunately not the car. If I have to drive in really bad weather I prefer my wifes front wheel drive Toyota Tercel. I would drive the 968 in the snow for fun but they salt the roads here so I have retired my car from its days of driving on salted roads.

That's why I use Magnetic Numbers on the F-stock car. Wearing WinterSport M2's on Boxster wheels at the moment

It's not the snow that bothers me but rather the chemicals that are spread on the roads. I will drive the car until the first snowfall/road chemical application - then she gets parked, usually until spring. I'll bring her back out after there is no longer a threat of inclement weather and after a good soaking rain to wash away any chemical residue. This philosophy has worked great with my '92 Miata as the undercarriage looks practically brand new. I'm the original owner of that car (only 40K miles) and it currently resides with my Mom as a weekender and still is never snow bound. I'm the third owner of my 92 Cab and have cleaned about 90% of the 13 year build up of crud from the underside. It is in pretty good shape and came from a warm weather climate so I'm pretty sure it has never seen snow and if I can help it, it never will. My 4WD Ford Explorer Sport Trac is the preferred daily driver this time of year.

Okay, here's my $0.04 (inflation) worth. Living in the Wash DC area we have had some snow in the last week. I don't drive in the snow even with LSD on my 95. My concerns are 1) other drivers in SUVs that think they are invincible in the snow and 2) the chemcials on the road. I do however drive when then roads are clear and there is no threat of snow. I couldn't bear to leave the car sitting all winter. My wife unit has a Audi AllRoad so bring on that white stuff.

The folks at Porsche were kind enough to:

A) Galvanize the body on these cars like there's no tomorrow

Size wheels/tires to allow for chains

The 968 makes heat faster than my VW. Gotta love it.

Now, if the car is truly a garage queen, then I agree... One would want to avoid all the salt stuff.

But if you want to extract the practical side of the car (I've driven my Porsche's year round for 5+ years), then you do need to find a detail shop that can do a good hand wash a couple of times during the winter. They'll usually clean the thing better than I can in the course of an entire sunny Saturday, spray all the underside/wheel wells out, and give it that wonderful "just detailed" look for under $20.

Of course, YMMV. But there is a reason you don't see rusty 968's and 944's out there. You can take a hammer to the body on these cars and still not penetrate the galvanization.

Thank you Dr. Porsche and friends for making a very practical supercar!

I just mounted some Wintersport M3's to get around in Denver for the winter. While we don't use salt here, there is a lot of sand used and that is my main fear. I don't have to commute, however, so that saves on the wear and tear.

Oh YEAH....although this will be the last winter. Sad though...the 944 is SO FUN to drive sideways!

Blizzak tires are the antidte for slick roads.

I'm with Etnier as my coupe is a daily driver. No problems yet this year but last year on my regular tires I managed two 360's without incident on the way to the railroad station. I was at a business meeting when the forcast was rain. Well during the meeting it suddenly got colder freezing the rain, then covering it with snow. I took me 5 hours to drive 20 miles home. With my regular tires, I couldn't get up a slight incline at a railroad crossing. It took several tries and a long head start to make it over. What is the consensus on snow tires that handle well wet or dry and are relatively quite?

I'm quite pleased with Bridgestone Blizzak tires. IMHO, they do all that you're asking about.

I had Blizzaks on my car and when they wore out I went to Dunlop Graspics, which seem to work at least as well for less $$$$.

It makes heat faster than anything I've ever driven, including 944's be a significant factor. It's very nice in cold weather, but almost alarming in its rapidity.

I'm not aware of the relative price differences on the winter tires as part of my deal when I purchased my car included the then-new Blizzaks.

Yes, the rapid availability of interior heat is quite welcome. I had a late-80s Jetta that was also notable in the same way.

Dunlop Graspics on mine, and they do great. I was told they'd last longer than the Blizzaks. My only complaint is that they're a little loud, but nothing I can't live with.
