New leather
#1

I was going to have a local guy do the front seat leather...but i can easily do some stretching and hogging for 1000$ less. Only thing is that his leather felt pretty nice and I could get French seams.

BUT, I saw this add....:

Anybody use Rolini covers?

I've visited their website as well and even sent an e-mail...kit 4 and kit 8 are the same...I would like a color sample but haven't got a reply on that one yet. I'll e-mail again. Looks decent, but no first hand experieince. Performance Products sells the real deal with perferated inserts but at 1100.00/pr IIRC. I may try the Rolini in Black for the 944 before I find out that they aren't all that and the "navy" doesn't match my Marine Blue! Hopefully someone else will chime in.

How difficult is the hog ring installation...never tried replacing seat coverings before. That's the only part that has me a little hesitant.

Hog rings a very simple to use. Just buy a set of hog ring pliers. You can get a decent pair for under $30.

You could probably R&R the seats and recover them in an afternoon.

I used these folks. http://www.worlduph.com/ A local shop whose owner has about 40 years experience said they were quality, and I've been very pleased. They look OEM!

just got email from Rolini 'johnny' says leather not quite an exact match to stock color. Seams are stock..and they can't do French seams (which are real nice) . 928leather shop down the street can do seats in REAL nice leather with French seams for 1500$....I just don't know...could use the 900$ savings on cam chain and timing belt overhaul....

You can never be too careful sending $$. BTW X you are my hero. You are essentially doing a full restore on the beast single handedly. I don't have the skill, time, or energy to take something like that on and it is a lot of fun to see your progression. Keep it coming!!

THANKS! it is not very difficult, just need the tools..and the time, like you say.

Can't wait to hit the engine...everything pretty good up there so I have left it for last. plan is (maybe) a 944 turbo transplant if I can get a decent engine to rebuild. I really like the 3.0 and will consider a turbo mod with Haltech control...but 944 2.5 has been proven by many to take the abuse of boost.

Has anyone tried re-upholstering the seats themselves?

I have some new covers for the sports seats in my '92 Coupe and armed with hog rings and pliers had a go today, but found that the original covers are glued to the foam. At this point I decided to put them back together and re-group as I was afraid of damaging the foam whilst doing this.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Carefully trim the foam with a razor balde as you pull the leather back.

Some guys really like the feel of leather and, um, French seams... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Anyway, Fred, why don't you PM me a week or so in advance of you having an afternoon free, and I'll come over and show you how to do the timing & balance-shaft belt job yourself (with my tools still in your possession since August, no less). I'm partial to Goodyear belts, by the way.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum but I'm replacing the Cashmere color leather front seats and possibly the vinyl back seat covers of my 1992 Midnight Blue Coupe. The example of the "french seam" lead me to reply with a picture of a seat with french seams, but i can't figure out how to upload on this forum yet.

I'm using Robert Budd at;

<www.928leathershop.com>

I've spoken to Rob several times and he has been very helpful. I've ordered dark blue stitching and french seams and the two front seat sets so spec'ed come to $1k. Rob's address and phone are on his web site along with quite a few pictures of his leather re-upholstery work. There are very clear color charts for the leather which Rob said is German and from the same as OEM source. He has a number of interior products, mostly all for Porsche. He shows a Tornado - I think it was- he did for Jay Leno - all very nice. There is a very nice "french seam" picture here;

http://www.928leathershop.com/Porsche_Seat...e_and_Kits.html

I appreciate the information on the "hog ring' tools as I will try to replace the covers myself. Rob said to "steam" the foam and it will recover it's original shape.

I will upload some pictures when I figure out how to do that - I think it might be a newbe permission thing? And let you know how my upholstery project is going. Thanks in advance for any other help.

Cheers,

red,
